Actually, this trailer doesn’t look as bad as I feared – but sadly it doesn’t look anywhere near as good as I hoped. One thing becomes instantly clear though: changing the point of view from Roland to Jake gives the film a strong YA fantasy vibe (sadly of the most derivative kind: boy discovers secret world, gets drawn into a battle between good and evil, yadda, yadda, yadda), especially for people who don’t know the novels.
But the Dark Tower books are not YA material at all, and they are about Roland’s epic journey, not Jake’s (although he - along with Eddie and Susannah - plays a very important role) , and despite the fact that changing that might have made it easier to sell this project to a studio (and much easier for Goldsman to write the kind of generic story he’s known for), this departure from the source material might end up alienating fans as well as scaring away adult audiences not familar with the novels (btw, does anybody know if they're aiming for a PG-13 rating with this film?).
Oh, and Roland is NO superhero; what he does with his guns in the novels is more akin to Clint Eastwood’s abilities in Sergio Leone’s dollar trilogy than to what we saw in this trailer. Elba's gunslinger seems more the modern action (super-) hero type, jumping off buildings and such. Not sure I'm on board with that.

I do kind of wish that there was more of an old west vibe that the novels had. Also, Roland should be in hat, lol.

I always liked 'IT' as my favorite Stephen King book until the "GUNSLINGER' series came out. I too pictured it more old west style. I pictured Clint Eastwood as the Gunslinger and I can't remember the character name in the wheelchair as being Whoopi Goldberg. The trailer looks interesting but I hope they haven't drifted to far off the path and try to stay as faithful as possible to King's story. With so many mess ups of King's novels I really want this to be good.

I just hope he doesn't end up being like Neo from the Matrix. I get a Matrix type feel from that trailer. I think I'd rather have a different story inspired by the books than a chopped up book adaption. I wish they'd do a TV show on Netflix. I feel like that's the only way to get a true book adaption. I'd cast Jeff Bridges as Roland and Liam Neeson as Walter. Maybe Woody Harrelson as Walter.

Sounds like they've butchered the source material.
This might be as bad as GITS 2017 when it comes to source accuracy.
Full disclosure: I have not read the source books, but judging from this thread....
