Watched it back in 2011 or so but I remember hearing loads of hate for it with some saying it was one of the worst horror films ever made. While it was a pointless remake I remember it having a serious tone and a good sense of dread. Making Freddy a child molester also added a kind of unnerving aspect to the movie. Think it was bashed more for being a pointless remake rather than it being that bad on its own

I have never see it and shall never do so. The 1984 film is a horror classic that should never in a million years have been remade.

I am changing my response after more consideration.
Is it possible to make a good re-imagining of A Nightmare on Elm Street? Probably.
Unfortunately the remake we got is a lazy pile of cynical cash grab garbage. No director or writer with any talent has any interest to remake A Nightmare on Elm Street and that is the sort of filmmaker that could possibly make a good remake.
Rob Zombie would have been better suited to do a re-imagining of A Nightmare on Elm Street than Halloween imo.
It is no secret that good and average remakes can be made from classics.
Good - The Hills Have Eyes, Dawn of the Dead, The Fly
Average - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Child's Play, Evil Dead
Awful - A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th
Abominations - The Fog, Poltergeist (the only bad performance I have seen from Sam Rockwell)

1/10 A lifeless, dull, boring mess and an insult to the original. Its on my worst 100.

Had real potential to be something interesting and fell short. I did enjoy Haleys performance as Freddy but outside of that theres not much going on here.

It’s not as awful as people say, but it’s still very problematic and a vastly inferior film to the original. I wish they have JEH better material to work with, he could’ve been even better as Krueger.

I thought that it was a decent remake. I like the more serious atmosphere of it and as you said, there was a good sense of dread.
Imo, it gets way too much hate.

I didn’t think it was that bad when I first saw it I think mainly cause I just had no expectations. When I watch it again it gets worse every time. Jackie I’m sure could have been a great Freddy, but JFC the voice was way too demonic for Freddy to the point where I kept thinking it was a demon instead of Freddy. The scares were predictable, the deaths I’m sure were ripped from the original movie too.
Like someone said A Nightmare remake can work, but it needs someone who had actually made movies before and not GREEN DAY MUSIC VIDEOS!!!

Perfectly watchable but incredibly underwhelming and redundant. The only parts that hinted at anything approaching inspired were the use of the Everly Brothers song and the casting of JEH as Fred. 4/10

I haven't seen it, but Jackie Earle Haley was a pretty good casting choice. MAybe I'll check it out some time.

I hear they made a much version of the movie with some slight story alterations and additional material that ultimately was scrapped in reshoots and final editing touches. Even some of those who worked on it think the finished film barely resembled what they had signed on for.
