I remember seeing this movie as a kid sometime between 1982/1984.
I think that it played on HBO due to the number of times that it aired, but searching old HBO guides has provided nothing. Google and IMDB searches have been no help either.
The movie takes place on a farm sometime in the past. I believe during the depression from my memory of the costumes worn. Possible earlier. These kids were playing in a barn or something. One kid somehow takes a fall and breaks his leg. Seems like he was swinging on a rope or fell out of the hayloft.
Afraid of getting in trouble with his parents, he doesn't tell anybody about the leg. The leg becomes gangrenous and has to be amputated at the knee. He is given a wooden prosthetic leg.
At first, he is a novelty with the kids in the area. They call him “peg leg” and invite him along to their adventures. But soon, they realize that he can't keep up and ditch him as a friend. The narrator even says “after the novelty of (his name)'s peg leg wore off”.
There was another period movie that played on HBO during this 1982-1984 time period called “Treasures of the Snow”. The movie is similar. A kid breaks his leg and is crippled. But in that movie, the kid's leg get repaired by surgery. So obviously that isn't the movie.
That's all that I can remember
Any help is appreciated
