I know there were trilogies before Star Wars, but do you think Star Wars is the reason trilogies are a mainstay of modern blockbuster cinema?

In the early 90's it kind of seemed that way, there were big franchises and all you had were 3 movies, so you had to settle for a trilogy and the 3rd movie in that franchise usually was or seemed conclusive and there didn't seem any reason to expand on them: Star Wars, Alien, Die Hard, Rambo, Indiana Jones Robocop, Lethal weapon were the big ones. Since then they have moved way passed them and if a series does well they keep on going.
One thing Star Wars might have affected on big blockbusters was having a 2nd movie as a cliffhanger, like Matrix Revolutions, pirates of Caribbean sequel,LOTR,Dark Knight series etc..probably more I'm sure

I thought the Clint Eastwood Dollars trilogy started it.

Didn’t Planet of the Apes start it? There were 5 of those. There were 9 Star Wars movies. Maybe the trilogy doesn’t even exist as a concept.

There were 9 Star Wars movies. Maybe the trilogy doesn’t even exist as a concept. The key difference is that the Planet of the Apes movies were made only a few years apart from each other. There were only three Star Wars films for 16 years.

Is it a mainstay? How many since Star Wars were intended to be a trilogy (Star Wars itself wasn't) and how many went beyond 3 or had a third that was a cash in or low quality.
If you look at some of the influences on Star Wars it might indicate why Lucas didn't initially go beyond 3 films....or maybe it's a conincidence
The Flash Gordon serials were a trilogy of series
Lord Of The Rings was released as a trilogy
Hidden Fortress star Toshiro Mifune had made the Samurai trilogy in the 50s

It was the first I can think of where a "plan" to make a certain number was being advertised well in advance. Excluding the James Bond series.
Lucas discussed several films by 1980. I don't think trilogy was advertised until the VHS tapes were coming out. "Own the Star Wars trilogy" etc.

There were plans for three separate trilogies, but George Lucas abandoned that idea by the time they got to RotJ.

Star Wars and backed up by Indiana Jones. During those times. Only to finally be broken in the Harry Potter and Twilight age. If you were an aspiring Hollywood wanna be filmmaker in the times of the mid-80's to the mid 2000's you wanted your idea to be a trilogy.
