In Total Recall it can be viewed that the movie from when Arnie freaks out at Rekall is all part of his egotrip. The implant guy goes 'blue sky on Mars that's a new one' on the TV screen it shows Melina and at the end before the credits the light begins to penetrate the scene as if Arnie was waking up.
On the other side, it could all be coincidence, he did dream of Mars and Melina before he got to Rekall, so it was not a dream it was reality.
What do you think? Total Recall, was it the ego trip or was it reality?

I refuse to believe it was a dream.

Not a Dream, mostly just because we see things from perspectives other than Arnold’s. If we only saw things from Arnold’s POV, then I’d reconsider.

It's totally explained on the dvd commentary. But since most people have heard it already, probably, i guess i don't need to go into it.

I like to think it was real. If it wasn't, the whole movie would have an air of pointlessness to it.

I lean dream. Everything that happens on Quaid's dream adventure is basically what he's signed up for and promised.
I don't think it makes the movie pointless. Rather, more self-aware and satirical, as per RoboCop.

No.
I'd like the movie even less if I thought it was a dream.
The short story is brilliant btw.

Rather, more self-aware and satirical, as per RoboCop. I am up for a debate on this one. In the movie he is obsessed with going to Mars and for me the reason in because he has already been there and had his memory erased. The irony in my view is that it did no good and that his subconscious draws in him back to it making the erasing of his memory pointless. Not only that but it ends up causing the demise of the villains who set it all up to begin with. I may be remembering slightly wrong, but that is what happens in the short story, though there are 2 different scenarios in the short story. The set up is similar in the story, but what follows is very different and the last act is nothing a like. My dislike of the movie has nothing to do with the script though. I have only seen the movie 3 times and the most recent was 3 years ago.

"Don't fuck with your brain pal. It ain't worth it."
"I 'guess' not."

When he is using the holographic watch and the soldiers shoot at him--they are in a circle and none of the bullets hit the other soldiers.
Goof or dream physics?

Mars represents something exciting and different. It's like an American Beauty take on 80s action and sci-fi. The joke is that Arnie is playing a guy who wishes he was in an Arnie movie and gets to live it out a little...and shoot his wife in the head.

When he is using the holographic watch and the soldiers shoot at him--they are in a circle and none of the bullets hit the other soldiers. Goof or dream physics? Goof. Because if it is his dream there is no reason why the bullets shouldn't be hitting them. Other people die in the "dream" so why do the soldiers get a pass? The rest of the dream conforms to the rules of the world the movie sets up from the start. Not to mention that would make it way to obvious if intentional, unless he did it purposely to make people wonder if it was a goof or intentional. I suppose a case can be made that that fits with the kind of filmmaker Paul Verhoeven is.

I guess I just don't find that as interesting, but I get the reasoning. Obviously that is what the viewer is meant to think before he goes to the recall center, because it does make sense. It is just the basic everyday person fantasy in movie form.
