In other words, what are the kinds of movies that are truly for “cinephiles”, rather than a mainstream audience?

I guess some of those Terrence Malick movies, like The Tree of Life.

I love "Toby Dammit" by Federico Fellini. Terence Stamp was great.

Godard's La Chinoise (The Chinese) and La Gai Savior (Joy of Learning) Resnais' L'Année dernière à Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad)
I enjoyed all of them but I could seriously imagine that the average Joe would hate these movies intensely. All 3 have beautiful transfers on Blu-ray now in case anyone is interested.

I think that foreign language films, esp. older ones, would automatically qualify as "art films" to many people so I will stick to English language.
A lot of Woody Allen's output in the 1980s and '90s look like he was going for "art for art's sake" rather than big B.O., e.g. Zelig, Broadway Danny Rose, Radio Days
Long Day’s Journey Into Night / Sidney Lumet The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner / Tony Richardson The Servant / Joseph Losey Toys In The Attic / George Roy Hill The Hill / Sidney Lumet Blowup / Michelangelo Antonioni Incubus / Leslie Stevens The Swimmer / Frank Perry Castle Keep / Sydney Pollack Medium Cool / Haskell Wexler THX 1138 / George Lucus The Iceman Cometh / John Frankenheimer Straight Time / Ulu Grosbard Local Hero / Bill Forsythe House Of Games / David Mamet Kundun / Martin Scorsese
