Who knows with Hollywood accounting. Production costs are so ridiculous--it's all BS from bad management and corruption. They made costs spiral, then claim they cannot take risks--then take risks with movies that no one wants, then claim they lost money-or maybe they didn't because of China. Hollywood accounting.

I'm guessing Fincher, Douglas and Penn counted for about half of that.

I'm guessing Fincher, Douglas and Penn counted for about half of that. Yeah, salaries can really balloon a budget.

That's probably why big CGI filled super hero movies often don't use big A-listers to sell their movies, the budgets would spiral out of control. Look at past examples. The fist X-men movie? No "huge" stars or anything, you could try to make the argument for Patrick Stewart, but he was never really an A-lister or anything, mostly known Star Trek. The first Spider-man film? Again Tobey Maguire was a relatively nobody at the time (interestingly enough James Cameron did wanna make a Spider-man film with Leonardo Dicaprio). Oh, what's that you say, Iron Man? Robert Downy Jr was a washed up has been at the time, his career nearly destroyed by drug abuse, he was very lucky he even got the role to begin with (Favreau had to fight the studio), he only got $500,000 for the role.

I'm guessing Fincher, Douglas and Penn counted for about half of that. Don't forget also Fincher loves 100 different takes on a scene.

Case in point: How Do You Know (2010) - $120 million budget for a comedy From Wikipedia: "The total production cost of the film was $120 million, with the net budget at about $100 million after tax rebates from Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. The combined salaries for the director James L. Brooks (about $10 million) and the four major stars Reese Witherspoon ($15 million), Jack Nicholson ($12 million), Owen Wilson ($10 million) and Paul Rudd ($3 million) totaled about $50 million. Brooks' "slow and meticulous" production and post-production also explained the size of the budget."
