I liked it. I actually think it’s perfectly crafted. Still I liked two other films better that came out the same year. Forrest Gump? That & Pulp Fiction are higher on my list

Yes. It is probably the best, most faithful, of Stephen King's novels to film. The Shining is great, but does veer away from the novel somewhat. It actually strays a bit from the short story, but is a masterpiece on its own. Beautifully and heartfully directed by Darabot with fabulous cinematography and well-nuanced characters, it digs deep into your soul and stays with you afterwards. This is one of those films that if I happen upon it while channel surfing, I just watch it again. Just simply wonderful.

If I remember correctly, in the story Dufresne did kill his wife and her lover in a fit of rage. No, Andy did not kill his wife in the short story.

Great idea .... tell details of the story for the benefit of those who have not seen it or read it ! Like for instance, the OP ! Spoiler is our friend !

While on this tangent...I don't condone spoilers...but I find it oftentimes that I enjoy many movies the second time thru more than the first because i know what happens and where the plot is heading. This is obviously a personal opinion and I wouldn't use it to justify spoiling anything for anyone else...but it rarely bothers me to be given plot points ahead of time.

I am of the "let people see it without knowing the plot ahead of time" school of thought. There are many many movies with secret twists that I like more each time I see them but the first time was the only time I did not know the secret and there in lay the real fun.
I even saw Kane and did not know who Rosebud was ! and the Sixth Sense and Witness for the Prosecution. All enjoyable as re-watches but not the same experience as when you did not know ! . Getting off the hobby horse now

Well, that's often built on the surprise of the first viewing though. Someone spoiling a movie doesn't often provide the details that help us appreciate the plot more.

In any plot description, it mentions Andy is going to prison for crimes he didn't commit. I wasn't talking about Shawshank at all However whether he committed the crime or not is a plot point that isn't resolved until midway through the movie if at all. The audience assumes his innocence. Unless the plot description is coming from the studio, it is irrelevant what it reveals.

I love it. But for it to be #1 on IMDb is ridiculous. It’s no “Godfather”
I actually prefer “Green Mile”

It's a very well written and directed movie with strong performances all round and a quality cast. Far superior to the Stephen King novel, that's for sure. Having said that, like most prison dramas it's a rather depressing watch at times and I found it quite unsettling. I'm a bit biased though, as prison dramas have never been a particular favourite of mine. Nonetheless, I would definitely recommend checking it out, even if it isn't a personal favourite.
