What exactly was the connection to the tv series here? It seems like it just used its name.

No real connection other than the title. The whole show was just a series of standalone horror tales anyway, so there wasn't really much to connect to. Especially in the absence of a Cryptkeeper-type narrator.
Good movie though. And the production standards were leagues ahead of what we got in the TV show.
