What a sweet, precious movie this one is. The story of an ugly duckling who is transformed by the loving care of a psychiatrist, who then, in turn, extends love and warmth and support to an awkward, unhappy young girl. This movie is practically the essence of the tearjerker. Such a sweet, lovely movie.
Good movie, but Max Steiner's score, particularly the constant repetition of the first few bars of "It Can't Be Wrong," gets to be overbearing at times.
Gladys Cooper, who plays Charlotte's stern, controlling mother, but was a sweetheart in real life, was very good friends with Davis.
Young Cooper:
Cooper did a great job. Here she's getting ready to slump down into her seat. I like how Chatlotte stands up to her mother without being mean or overly aggressive.
Thank you for the young Cooper picture. Wow, she's quite pretty. I would never have guessed it.
I think Bette Davis made better directed films like 'Jezebel', 'The Little Foxes', 'All About Eve' etc. but here she has the showcase stole from Irving Rapper as she controlled him in the booth.
Of those you have listed, I have only seen All About Eve. I think avocadojoe likes Davis in Old Acquaintance for the quality of her down-to-earthness and likeability factor. To stand corrected though, I don't think OA is his favorite of hers, but in his top 5. That honor goes to Baby Jane.
It's smelly crap. I was thinkig of some other steamig pile. Sorry.

While viewing this on Friday and closely looking at Cooper's face, I thought she must have been very pretty as a young woman. Great picture.
As for Davis, I think one of her better, if not best, performances was in The Little Foxes.

You have a good memory, you rascal. I do like "Old Acquaintance" very much, probably behind "All About Eve", "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" and "Dead Ringer", which I can't help but love. You get to hear Bette sing "Shuffle Off to Buffalo"! "Old Acquaintance" just has a very likable and, like you said, down to earth Bette Davis character. It's been a long time since I came across the quote, but I am pretty sure that Bette herself said it was the character in this movie that most resembled her in real life, and a no nonsense Bette pretty much can't be stopped.

You mean Old Acquaintance is smelly crap? I can't comment, haven't seen, but I usually place great stead in avo's swinging joes when it comes to classic films and stars. I am not that well acquainted with films pre 70's.

I'm not all that big a fan of "The Little Foxes". Davis is great, as always, but I usually can't get into movies that are set in pre 1920s. It's a silly prejudice of mine, but there's something depressing/dreary about a time in life when there were no telephones or cinemas or air conditioning. Just like I can't stand the Old West. I just like the modern conveniences.
Now movies set in the future are fine.
