There was a real Grey Poupon commercial which featured the rich guy in the back of the limo squirting the mustard out of a squeeze bottle, which made a farting noise and startled the chauffeur.
I recall seeing the original commercial when it aired during Reagan's inauguration. I remember thinking how snobbish it was. In retrospect, it was symbolic of that day--the era of conspicuous wealth and greed had begun (and still continues with the admiration of that boorish slob in the WH).

In retrospect, it was symbolic of that day--the era of conspicuous wealth and greed had begun (and still continues with the admiration of that boorish slob in the WH). Do you know if there's a vid of that particular ad anywhere, Marianne? I've been a huge fan of the late Ian Richardson, who starred in those commercials (he once remarked more Americans probably knew him from those ads than from anything else in his decades-long stage, film and television career) for many years and I thought I'd seen all of them, but I swear I don't recall this one and it sounds funny. I'd love to add it to the collection. (I don't think the ads were really meant to be snobbish except in a sort of humorously ironic way, but it is true they were produced in an era where the sort of attitudes you name about wealth had become ubiquitous in US life, and the Reagan era was an active generator and promoter of them. And yes, those attitudes, which now seem to have become a permanent fixture for many, certainly have been embodied in Dump's reign. Many people I know who admire him often preface their listing of his virtues with the opening statement that he's a billionaire--as though that made him godlike in all other respects, and a perfect choice to be president.)

I'm not able to load it, but it's on YouTube: "Old Grey Poupon Farting Commercial."

I'm not able to load it, but it's on YouTube: "Old Grey Poupon Farting Commercial." Thanks (and what a title, lol). I'll have to look this one up. EDIT: Just checked this one out, and it must have been from a different batch of GP ads. That's not Richardson in this one, but an actor who somewhat resembled him. Still a pretty funny ad, though.
