I would doubt that anybody would give a high rating to every movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture or that the critics all awarded the highest ratings to. But sometimes our preferences do coincide with the critical darlings.
I used as my criteria for my list Leonard Maltin's rating system. Pauline Kael is my favorite critic, but she could be very hard to please. Maltin is a good, often interesting critic who always employs a certain degree of objectivity in his reviews. So, if he awarded a film ***1/2 or better, it counted. I chose 20 movies for my list. Maltin's rating/my rating. Obviously no movie garners **** from every critic, so for this list, you can just rely on your own judgment calls.
1. "3 Women" - ***1/2/**** (my no. 2 favorite movie of all time) 2. "The Innocents" - ***1/2/**** (no. 3) 3. "Midnight Cowboy" - ****/**** (no. 6) 4. "Jaws" - ****/**** (no. 8) 5. "Rosemary's Baby" - ****/**** (no. 10) 6. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" - ****/**** (no. 12) 7. "The Last Picture Show" - ****/**** (no. 13) 8. "Jules and Jim" - ****/**** (no. 15) 9. "Psycho" - ****/**** (no. 18) 10. "A Streetcar Named Desire" - ****/**** (no. 20) 11. "The Deer Hunter" - ****/**** (?) 12. "Terms of Endearment" - ****/**** 13. "Dumbo" - ****/**** 14. "All About Eve" - ****/**** 15. "Nashville" - ****/**** 16. "In a Year with 13 Moons" - ***1/2/**** 17. "Ordinary People" - ****/**** 18. "Dog Day Afternoon" - ***1/2/**** 19. "Tootsie" - ****/**** 20. "Mr. Hulot's Holiday" - ***1/2/****
