That's all well and good, although we'll probably get to know them as well as the bridge crew members on this show - that is not very well.

I'd rather see characters brought into a drama because of a natural and organic growth in the way the drama progresses, as apart from introducing them to appease the latest Hollywood bandwagon trend.

If they were truly daring (and they won't be--this show has no courage or imagination to speak of) they would introduce a trans character for the purpose of exploring what trans phenomena would be like in the high tech Star Trek universe. Think about it--biotech would be so advanced that people could physically transition from one sexual body type to another as often as they wanted and the very idea of sex and gender could potentially become so fluid as to be meaningless. People who strongly self identified as male or female could just transition for kicks. This has (of course) already been explored in science fiction literature, but it would be awesome if they had thought to do it in this context. I know they won't, I'm just contemplating the lost opportunity.

Luckily, since "Discovery" isn't good enough to be shown on tv, it will never "move the needle" or become a part of the cultural zeitgeist no matter how many stunts they pull.

I agree, I've thought Star Trek has been in prime position to explore these themes and the possibilities that advanced science could present. I can't say I'm holding my breath for the likes of Star Trek Discovery to do anything particularly profound with the concept though, but almost anything is possible. DS9 arguably came the closest in a couple of ways. With the likes of Dax and other Trill, there definitely was the notion that gender and sexuality could be much more fluid. They weren't bound by conventional expectations when it came to people they were attracted to, or necessarily defined by the type of body any given symbiont happened to occupy at the moment. Then there was "Profit and Lace," which for better or worse, explores similar themes of gender identity. Quark undergoes gender reassignment with such relative ease, and then transitions back again. I do agree with Armin Shimerman's criticism of that episode, in that the experience has no lasting impact on Quark, he doesn't learn anything; and that the writers tried to approach it too much as a high farce, whereas Armin (and director, Alexander Sidig) took a more serious approach and the two didn't mesh well. But it does kind of set the bar for Discovery, which shouldn't be that difficult to clear, but Discovery being Discovery will probably find some way of fucking it up.
