Martin Campbell directed “GoldenEye” and “Casino Royale”
“GoldenEye” is easily the best Brosnan Bond film, and one of my favorites overall in the series.
“Casino Royale” is the best James Bond movie imho.
While the other Brosnan films doesn’t come close to GoldenEye. And Craig’s other outings don’t come close to Casino Royale.
FFS, let him direct the new Bond film with the new James Bond actor and then let him continue directing.

I kind of wish that Campbell was the one they picked to reboot Batman after The Dark Knight Rises. I think he’d been great.

I’d prefer they treat Batman like James Bond. Have a new Bruce/Batman for like 3-5 movies and then cast a younger Batman. Then you could do “The Long Halloween “ or “The Killing Joke” or whatever. Even “The Dark Knight Returns” for an older Batman. Etc... then if the movie sucks, you don’t have to reboot it. Just make a new film.

I don't think he wanted to limit himself to just Bond movies.

I don't think he wanted to limit himself to just Bond movies. He’s made some other decent films, but man his niche is James Bond. I also like how he had fun with the dialogue. In “GoldenEye” “M” by Judi Dench is new, and Bond is the veteran. And she says “You’re a masochistic dinosaur, a relic of the Cold War” ... and in “Casino Royale” “M” by Judi Dench is the Veteran and Bond is new. She says “Christ, I miss the Cold War” when he mucks up the assignment at the beginning.

I don't blame him for not wanting to another Bond film so soon after GoldenEye. It's exhausting to do just one. The best answer as reported in the trades is that he was asked to direct the next Bond film after GoldenEye, but he declined because it would be repetitive.
Also, Campbell was asked this same question back in 2017 and he replied with this:
