Solid stuff. Tommy Lee's best career work is in the final episode, imo.

Duvall and Jones are excellent. It’s a good flick.

This has such meaning for me, this book and TV series Lonesome Dove. In the late 80's my dad was disabled, and he read books and watched TV all the time. I brought him Lonesome Dove, the book, and he loved it. Devoured it, and loaned it to his elderly sister and her husband who loved it too.
In Dad's last months, the series was made and shown on TV. My dad was an avid viewer. Loved the series, Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall were so good.
Every time I see the title of Lonesome Dove I think of my Dad and how much joy the book & series brought him in his last times on earth.

Outstanding piece of work, and I'm not really fond of that genre.

Had only seen bits of pieces, but I should really watch the whole thing. Especially since I dig a good western and like both actors a lot.

The greatest western movie ever made and, yes, I'm taking into account that it was made for television and John Ford fans will object.
Unlike so many adaptations of great novels, it does full justice to the book thanks to the mini series format that allows it to cover every major incident and subplot over the course of several hours. There is not one wasted or padded moment.
A faithful, brilliant script never descends into the "buddy" concept with incessant jokey dialogue between the characters that has now become a tired cliche. Many of the twists and turns in the story are unexpected. Events play out logically and realistically, avoiding contrived situations in which the good guys always win, the bad guys always lose and the heroes ride off into the Technicolor sunset little changed by everything that has transpired since the movie began.
Duvall and Jones are as perfect a combination as you will find in any film. Their final moments together certainly belongs on everyone's list of the most intensely dramatic scenes of all time. Jones's final line perfectly sums up the entire movie.
There have been a number of prequals and spinoffs of Lonesome Dove, but I've avoided them. It's hard to imagine any of them coming close to the magnificence of the original or the outstanding performances of its superb cast.

Near perfection, a masterpiece. Duvall gives one of the best acting performances ever. TL Jones too. Jones and Duvall mesh perfectly. The whole cast shines. Frederic Forrest, Gavin O'Herilhy (not spelled right), Danny Glover, even Robert Urich, an actor I don't care for. One of those rare projects where everyone seems to try to outdo another with quality. The Godfather, Judgment at Nurenberg examples

After watching LD repeatedly over the years, it became my favorite Western and Duvall my favorite cowboy (Open Range 2003, Broken Trail 2006).
Earlier this week I was watching Dead Man's Walk (1996) out of curiosity. But none of the prequels or the tv show has the original actors and they don't match the quality of the original.

No, LD was never replicated. The books were all good, a couple better than LD.

Just watched it last week. Excellent miniseries with heavy lifting by the cast, especially Duvall and Jones. It did start to lull for me during episode 3, but not too long it had me hooked again.
