The Lynch movie has its virtues, and I applaud the ambition... clearly much of it doesn’t work, such as the inner monologues, but it’s not terrible. I did see the mini-series but don’t recall much about it... I found it pretty dull, I think. Do you think it's an unfilmable book? Well I have loved adaptations of seemingly unfilmable books before, so never say never. There’s a lot in Dune that is cinematic - but also a lot that is dense, complex - that on screen could come across as pompous or just silly. I’m looking forward to seeing this, though.

Always thought it to be unfilmable. Like Stephen King's The Dark Tower. Too much there. The trailer does look good (did I see floating Fremen, though?). Love the casting of Stellan Skarsgard as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, not so sure about the rest. Javier Bardam might have worked better as Leto and not Stilgar. But Lynch's version had an exceptional cast and look what that got him.
It's the only Sci-Fi I truly love. Please don't fuck it up again.
Did they write out Feyd? I don't see him listed in the cast.

Yeah, I can't find anything about Feyd or Shaddam IV.

Not "crusade". "Jihad".

Lord of the Rings was deemed unfilmable and look, Peter Jackson delivered the results of how it took an epic book on the big screen

Yeah, I can't find anything about Feyd or Shaddam IV. I guess it's two parts. I assume Feyd, the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV and Irulan all come in Dune II.
Seen one article say it takes place 9000 years in the future. A lot more than that but does anyone know for sure? I think I read 27,000 years. The year in the book is 10,000 and change A.G. (After the Spacing Guild). That was after the Butlerian Jihad, the Thinking Machine Era and the "Old Empire".
Look at me, nerding out. Gaaaa

Of course, he them completely screwed up the (on paper) much more adaptation-friendly The Hobbit, but that’s another story. LOTR is, however, much more accessible than Dune. The plot of Rings is easy to follow, the characters are more relatable, there is a lot more warmth. I hope this works, but the trailer does not encourage me.

Honestly, looks a little dull, but I'll probably give it a chance. I have no particular attachment to the book. Might be a good time to revisit Lynch's version, something I've been meaning to do for a while.

The 84 film didn't leave much impression (haven't read the book) I remember people shouting about spice and Patrick Stewart saying "what a monster" but that cast totally blows away this one in the veteran performer department. This looks like got a Marvel movie cast on their day off. The one area this should be better is in showing the sand worm if they don't make the cgi cheap.

The trailer looks good, Dune is my girlfriends fav book and movie, so I'm sure even if it turns out to be shit I'll be seeing it 5 times with her in December. Since this movie was first announced I've always wondered if this book has been mined for content too much by other franchises for the movie to be embraced by a wide audience?

According to Deadline the release date might be pushed back again to 2021 and Wonder Woman 1984 may take the spot previously reserved for Dune in December.

While I really want to watch Dune, tbh I think it's best if it's pushed back to 2021. Due to its grim tone it doesn't really feel like a christmas release to me and Villeneuve has mentioned that he needs to work 24/7 in order to try to get Dune finished on time. I'd rather have him take his time to finish it instead of having to rush it for the December release date.
