1. 49TH PARALLELL 1941 reigns supreme as the most touching and theatrical execution scene. You never even see it coming. You think it won't happen, but it does, and it generates your emotion even more into having Eric Portman's character caught and executed himself.
2. RED DAWN 1984 whatever one thinks of the propaganda or the movie, the execution scene is the top scene of the movie, and is stunning.
3. HANG EM HIGH 1968 the six man hanging shows six different attitudes towards the end. The two brothers are heart wrenching.
4. THE OX BOW INCIDENT 1943 of course has to be included.
5. ROME OPEN CITY 1945 hasn't lost its touch, no matter how hard modernists try to make us forget it.
6. THE KING OF KINGS 1927, because something about the silent movie gives the crucifixion added drama.
7. PATHS OF GLORY 1957 is one some put at the top of their list, but the execution scene is downplayed to the rest of the movie. The movie is more about the stupidity and injustice, and the execution is shown to be a climax of the injustice, which is why it works in the movie.
8. A TALE OF TWO CITIES 1935, for the best of times, the worst of times. Hard to see the "best of times", in this story, though.
9. THE QUICK AND THE DEAD 1995 told in flashbacks, this being perhaps the only "good spaghetti Western ever made" because it pits the surreal nature into an entire metaphor about Christianity.
10. THE NAME OF THE ROSE 1986 The chaos involved was more accurate than some might think about the power of the church. Cardinals were minor warlords, so to speak, with small groups of mercenaries, as in "Flesh+Blood".

"Any last words, GOONFACE?!"
"You can lick my royal hemorrhoids, you fat pig!"

what is that movie? I chose the humorous execution imposed by Queen Carlotta, because execution scenes always bother me deeply, and I could never use the "best" in relation to a scene like this. Maybe "worst" or "most (seemingly) realistic" or "most disturbing". In which case, the naked old lady being burned alive in "Day of Wrath" is about as awful as it gets.

Not "formal" executions but the killing of.... 1 the spy Gia Scala in The Guns of Navarone2 the deserter Warren Oates in Major Dundee....very similar.

It's not your usual execution scene, but The Twilight Zone episode "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is excellent. It even won an award at Cannes. Even taking into account the usual sterling quality of this show, this episode is memorable.
Cost to make "Schindler's List" @ 25 million dollars. Cost of an average episode of TTZ @ 65 thousand dollars.

Susan Hayward in the gas chamber in I Want To Live (1958).
When the man who is preparing her for the pellet drop says: Hold your breath for as long as you can then take a deep one. It's easier that way.
She responds: How would you know?
That is a memorable moment if ever there is one.
