Think about that. Really let that sink in.
I went for a causal bike ride yesterday, just to get some exercise and enjoy the morning.
I had Bluetooth headphones on listening to AC/DC and Guns and Roses. Just minding my own business and then I crossed the road. I was looking at my phone to see my progress and change the song. I didn’t hear a car on the side road adjacent from me. I guess they didn’t realize how fast I was peddling. I just so happened to have my left earbud pop out (due to sweat or whatever) and hear a screeching. I looked up and hit my brakes on my bike. I jumped off my bike and hit the asphalt.
It’s a hell of a thing, death. It takes away everything you’ve ever had, and everything you’re ever going to have.

True, except for that last sentence. Unless you've found a way to prove that nothing lies beyond the veil of death, it remains arguable.

True, except for that last sentence. Unless you've found a way to prove that nothing lies beyond the veil of death, it remains arguable. I meant on Earth.

You are right.
Should I care?
It really doesn't make a big difference to me if i die tomorrow or in 50 years. I accept my fragile mortality.
That sunk in a very long time ago.
I got rear ended by a semi on the highway on a rainy day a couple years ago and was pushed into oncoming traffic. I was sure I was going to die. I accepted it. Luckily I was extremely lucky and wasn't even harmed.

Why were you wearing headphones while riding your bike? You owe your life to sweat.

Death is a tough thing to come to grips with, and the fear of death is something I wish to overcome. I assume you just have to not give a fuck, but easier said than done.

I’d say you were being mindless. There is no other way out of that. I lose the moment many times and can sometimes end up in a pickle. It's impossible to stay focused all the time. I like how Shirley Jackson said it in her opening to "The Haunting of Hill House"... no live organism can stay sane under conditions of absolute reality for very long.

When someone I know has died, for instance, a woman who was a stay at home mom to her young son, I feel like I should have died instead

When someone I know has died, for instance, a woman who was a stay at home mom to her young son, I feel like I should have died instead That is your understanding empathy Ms. Moon. Life is full of tragedy and when we hear of these situations happening, it can put our own lives into more perspective. We know that any suffering we endure may not be so harsh in comparison. It's just hurtful that that little boy has to grow up without his mommy

It's just hurtful that that little boy has to grow up without his mommy All he can do is remember her for the time he had her. All being well, he will be well cared for by a decent relative or another home. That's true. Since she was a stay at home mom, they were always together. Must be hard on the little guy

True, except for that last sentence. Unless you've found a way to prove that nothing lies beyond the veil of death, it remains arguable. That’s not the way it works. For something to be arguable, there needs to be something to argue for. The inability to prove one thing, just on that condition alone, doesn’t open the door for an alternative argument. The alternate argument has to stand on its own merit.

Don't peddle so fast, keep your headphones at half volume or at least 75%, ride against traffic on the side of the road, or the sidewalk when empty, look before you make a move and you may live longer. These are the lessons I've learned at least.

I really want to slap people like you silly when I see them. Either jogging or riding a bike, or taking baby for a running stroll while also walking the dog - and PLUGGED IN TO THEIR FU<>KING HEADSETS!!! What is WRONG with you? Pedestrians also have a responsibility to ensuring their own safety!!! Same with assholes who, while in parking lots, just keep walking especially in back of cars and they may be in that driver's blind spot!! UGH!!! You all must have some deep-seated death wish.

Yes, I totally agree with you. It just seems so utterly oblivious. And the poster didn't even seem to comprehend their own culpability. There is an egregious lack of self-awareness here. I understand that a moving car can do more damage than a moving bike, but that doesn't give the cyclist a free pass. It's like they feel absolutely no responsibility in the situation and if the car does hit them because they weren't paying attention - and that's what this comes down to, not paying attention - think how awful that would be for the driver! It seems very immature of them. (I guess I'm being judgmental here!) Maybe the poster is just young and will grow out of it.
