Warren Oates played John Dillinger. If someone said, "you'd make a great Tonto!" Who would agree with that?
Or if someone said he should be Barnabas Collins.
Or if Jonathan Frid was told he could be Dillinger or Tonto.
I don't think it would work even if they were the right age for the character.
But Johnny Depp played Dillinger and Tonto and Barnabas Collins.
Is he the Thing? Or in these times anyone can play anyone?
Likewise, Anton Yelchin was Reece from the Terminator series, Chekov from Star Trek, and Charlie Brewster from Fright Night.
I can almost accept William Ragsdale as Chekov but barely, I cannot in any way accept him as Reece from the Terminator.
Michael Biehn, as a teenager, maybe I could see him as Charlie Brewster but not quite Chekov.
And Walter Koenig, maybe I could see him as Charlie, but while he really could scream in an agony booth, I cannot picture him as Reece saying " You still don't get it, do you? He'll find her! That's what he does! That's ALL he does! You can't stop him! He'll wade through you, reach down her throat and pull her fuckin' heart out!"
I dunno, I just find it one of those strange things how "actor types" has changed so much.

Yes.
Miscasting is if you think an actor was miscast.
It seems you are asking if Hollywood even tries with certain roles or that people just don't seem to notice or care anymore.
I notice and I care, though people will differ on which roles are miscast or not.
Christian Bale was most definitely miscast as Moses and everyone pointed this out.

As long as the movie makes money, then the studio heads won't care if people think an actor/actress is miscast in a movie.

I don't see why miscasting today would be any more of an antiquated notion than it would have been fifty years ago.

Absolutely. The two leads in Valerian; Jesse Eisenberg in Batman versus Superman; and the guy that played Jafar in Aladdin (2019) immediately come to mind for me.

Was Johnny Depp good in any of those roles? Nope. He was creepy as Willy Wonka, too. So he was miscast in all of them.

Yes
Recently we’ve had Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor as probably one of the biggest examples of miscasting in film history. Also Ezra Miller as Flash and Brie Larson as Captain Marvel

Eisenberg was a really bizarre choice for Luthor, though to be fair the producers wanted to "update" the character to be more of a modern millenial tech mogul type, not unlike Mark Zuckberberg (which incidently Eisenberg was actually cast as in The Social Network). A lot of Breaking bad fans wanted Brian Cranston to play him, which wouldn't have been a bad choice.

I wasn't onboard for the casting of Eisenberg but my first thought was that he'd play something like Mark Zuckerberg. Kind of cold and detached which I can see a young Luthor acting like that. But no, instead we got this offspring from the unholy union of Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter and Jim Carrey's Riddler.
I remember Joaquin Phoenix being considered at some point. Mark Strong was my pick for years.

I am pretty sure the reason Bryan Cranston was brought up for both Commissoner Gordon and Lex Luthor is because he voiced both of those characters in the DC animated movies.

Terminator Genysis, the casting for Sarah Connor and Reiss was too off I thought compared to the originals.

Pan (2015) is a mess of miscasting.

Terminator Genysis, the casting for Sarah Connor and Reiss was too off I thought compared to the originals. Actually although she was the wrong type, I could see why they chose Clarke because she kind of resembles Hamilton in the face--but comes across as too young and not edgy enough. The other was too anonymous. Nothing like Biehn. But as I said, it's like they just don't care anymore. There's no standards to anything now. It's like "a man should be able to play a woman and vice versa.."'
It's abstract expressionism being applied to film.
