At some level I really do think this is true. Beneficial for the mind and the heart and the soul and spirit. If a person never cuts loose and does something that is not necessarily good for them, I think a whole lot of anger, suppressed and otherwise, is going to mount. Also hate and jealousy and judgment. Of course, any kind of standard of measurement for what is "too much" is likely going to vary from person to person.

“The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they're going to have some pretty annoying virtues.”

It depends entirely on the person and their situation imo.
If they aren't hurting anybody besides themselves, I don't care what other people do.
Vices can cause people to do harm to other people, even if it is harm they don't realize they are doing.
Vices in small doses are healthy. I think most people would agree with that.

What kind of vices are we talking about here exactly?

What kind of vices are we talking about here exactly? Oh, that's hard to say. Junk food, liquor, drugs, indiscriminate sex would be fair examples. Smoking also, though the thought of developing emphysema scares me to death. On the flip side, some people are able to sublimate their drives and channel it creatively. Music, art, writing, etc. Some people can do it with sports, but I can't relate to athletics. Even though diving and gymnastics can be absolutley fascinating to watch. I think boxing is just all brute violence, but it's fair game.

Yes, that is what I am saying. Vices help us get perspective and vices let us blow off steam.

Yes, that is what I am saying. Vices help us get perspective and vices let us blow off steam. I felt that you were stating the obvious. in a way, it's obvious. But I was just thinking about Shirley Jackson's line at the beginning of her book "The Haunting of Hill House" - no live organism can exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality... even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream... I know I didn't get that exactly right, but the gist of it is there. I think that humans need vices in order to maintain sanity. And now that I read back on that, daydreaming could be considered a vice. And one of my favorite pastimes. I love to daydream. Do it all the time.

Reminds Catman of a bit from Mark Twain. The gist of the story is like this:
There was a widow who went to the doctor because she was not feeling well. The doctor said, "You'll have to give up smoking and drinking." When the widow said she did neither of those things, the doctor said, "Then there is no hope."
And the widow died.
