they kidnap people against their will including kids. And keep them against their will for who knows how long (didn't they release a WW2 pilot in modern day? That means that guy missed out on his whole life and his family died without ever knowing what happened to him). No doubt they performed experiments on the kidnapped humans as well. Yet the ending is portrayed as optimistic and upbeat. Fire in the Sky is a more realistic reaction to being abducted by aliens.

Fire in the Sky is a terrific movie, but it's based on something that may or may not be the truth. I see Close Encounters as more of a fable.

They aren't.
They are portrayed as non-violent.

I've never thought about them any other way. But you do have a point.
And Fire in the Sky was the nightmare of alien abduction films! I mean, it literally gave me nightmares!!

...didn't they release a WW2 pilot in modern day? That means that guy missed out on his whole life and his family died without ever knowing what happened to him Yes, ALL of the pilots and crew of the five planes from Flight 19 were abducted during WW2... and many other people were abducted throughout time as well... and were returned in "The Present Day". One has to wonder, what the Aliens were doing to them for all that time. They were not really "Good" Aliens for doing that... But in the end, the Aliens were not trying to destroy us, like in other films, such as "War Of The Worlds" & "Independence Day". Fire in the Sky is a terrific movie, but it's based on something that may or may not be the truth. The claim that Travis Walton was abducted by Aliens, may or may not be the truth. The "Murder" investigation, that happened in the town, while Travis Walton was missing, actually happened. What happened inside the Alien Ship, is pure Hollywood fantasy... Even if Travis Walton was really abducted, Hollywood found his claims about what happened to him inside the ship to be boring, so they made up that entire part of the film... Being Abducted By Aliens...Is Boring? LOL! And Fire in the Sky was the nightmare of alien abduction films! I mean, it literally gave me nightmares!! Yeah, even though it was pure Hollywood fiction, what happened to Travis Walton inside the space ship, was definitely creepy and scary... I am still bothered by the needle going toward his eye.

Yeah I thought of this too-you see what looks like a 1950s house wife wandering out of the ship. It's kind of like "yeah your personal life is screwed but you got to fly on a spaceship-neato!" Plus Dreyfuss abandons his family. I guess they were better off without him seeing how his wife and kids had no respect for him.

While the people returned came back to a different time, what did they gain in their time away?

Because the film didn't show it, but they were nice enough to leave a book behind, and we've already deciphered the code enough to learn the title is "To Serve Man".

I'm kinda surprised people identify with the OP.
It would have to be based on repeat viewings.
I remember the first time I saw this I thought the aliens were nothing but sinister until the last quater and even then it was clear they were using compulsion and kidnapping as a means to study humans.
Even Dreyfuss' character is compelled to be there. It may be that the aliens realize that kidnapping is wrong and a compromise is to seek volunteers now which means it has a happy ending, but the entire movie has them at best as a mystery.
Good? I didn't get that vibe. Harmless? Yes.
Good is not the same thing as harmless.

She agrees is was disturbing.

They returned the Grumman Avengers intact in the desert. Therefore they must have been old warbird buffs. Most aliens blow the airplanes up. Good aliens.

Spielberg corrected that error in the early moments of his War of the Worlds movie. Especially having Dakota Fanning's character ask if the invaders were terrorists.
