Lon Chaney Jr. couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. Did he get the part just because they wanted to use his famous name? A shame, since Claude Rains and Ralph Bellamy were real actors. Even the woman who played the Gypsy and the girl who was the love interest did better jobs.
And Bela Lugosi was on screen for like a minute and a half.
All the interesting stuff takes place in fog or behind a tree, in the dark, so you can't see anything.
Interesting to note that this film debuted in the US the week after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

I didn't really care for Lon Chaney Jr's performance either and anyway his face and physique obviously put some restrictions on how wolf-like they could make his character. Lugosi was fantastic, shame that he was in it for only few minutes. The old gypsy woman was good too, but they shouldn't have used his famous poetic monologue three times word-for-word in such a short movie. All foggy forest scenes are quite atmospheric but really tame, even by 40s standards I think, and too much time is spent on uninteresting character relationships. Still, it's quite good. Frankenstein, Bride and The Invisible Man are all better, though.
