At the time, WB wanted Nolan to make a “Man of Steel” trilogy in the same vein as “The Dark Knight” trilogy. But for Superman.
Nolan wanted to go on and make other films. He agreed to produce it, and help the director with his vision. He got Goyer, the same writer and gave him a general outline of how he would do it.
WB hired Snyder because of “Watchmen” and the amazing visuals. Also the action of “300”.
So with the producer Nolan overseeing the plot, Goyer writing, and Snyder’s visuals. They make “Man of Steel”. The plan was to make a sequel with Joaquin Phoenix as Lex Luthor “a one off” deal. He only agreed to do one film.
Well, the critics panned it because they compared it to “Superman” (1978) and Cavill to Reeves. Hated how he wasn’t the charming and charismatic version (which he was supposed to become by part III) it’s a character arc. It only made about 700M at the world wide box office. And it didn’t make 1B like Batman.
So WB says “Let’s throw Batman into the sequel” and then it becomes a “Let’s get to Justice League as quick as we can” so they could catch up to Avengers. Because the year before MOS, Avengers made 1.5 billion.
So Joaquin Phoenix drops out as Luthor for the sequel because it’s a new script and a “multi film” deal. They bring in Chris Terrio to help rewrite it. Nolan drops out as overseeing production. He might be credited but he isn’t active like he was for “Man of Steel”.
Imagine if Snyder, Goyer, and Nolan had made the planned trilogy as it was planned with Phoenix as Luthor? And eventually a Braniac plot in the 3rd film where Superman has to save the world. They did say they would leave a “Darkseid” Easter egg if they decided to use this Superman (Cavill) in a Justice League movie ... Post-Trilogy.

That’s not how it went. Snyder has said repeatedly that it was his decision to include Batman in the sequel. Jay Olivia even stated that Snyder showed him storyboards of Batman fighting Superman before MoS was released. BvS was Snyder’s idea. It wasn’t something WB forced on him.

I remember the rumors about Phoenix playing Luthor. Oh and Brainiac would be awesome.

He also said he wasn’t forced off of JL, it was his decision. Then it was revealed it wasn’t. Ayer also said “Suicide Squad” theatrical cut was his movie. It wasn’t. These people are paid a ton of money to say these things to help WB save face. It’s in their contracts.

Snyder has been very open about the fact that JL went through studio meddling, but he hasn’t said anything like that about BvS. He’s even taken numerous shots at the theatrical version of JL, which he admits he hasn’t even seen, and yet he still stands by BvS to this day. He’s made it clear that he’s proud of the movie, and he even did a watch party for it back in March of this year. By all accounts, the only real case of studio meddling that went on with BvS is that WB didn’t want it to be three hours long, which is why there’s an extended cut of it.
