I love both, honestly. The original has Jamie Lee (who I adore, one of the most authentic, least pretentious actresses on Hollywood) and Janet Lee, and is just awesome. The remake has a better ending IMO. which do you prefer?

The premise of THE FOG may sound silly, but execution is what matters. It's scary, but it could’ve used more interesting characters. And it definitely needed better pacing. 6/10 You know the term “Oscar-bait”? Well, THE FOG 2005 is a "Razzie-bait": A silly premise (sorry, original version, but it’s true), a boring story, dull characters (even more than in the 1st one), bad acting all around (including small roles (specially the actress playing STEVIE's mom)), a confusing ending and an atmosphere that's only suspenseful when the script says "Something scary will happen now" and therefore not suspenseful at all. There are also some unintentionally funny moments (like when ELIZABETH is being yelled at by the priest, and when she’s kissed by the ghost). 0/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

The original is a seasonal classic. The remake I liked so little I never care to revisit it. I'll rewatch Rob Zombie's Halloween, the Elm Street remake etc. but not that one.

The Fog (1980), written and directed by John Carpenter. Strange doings on the coast between midnight and one when fog rolls in and ghost lepers plague a cursed town. That's about it. Good cast and many jump-shocks in this one, probably a worthy date film for the scary-but-not-very-gruesome market. A clever setup: ghost stories on the beach. What are these films other than campfire tales in a new medium? Available on Shout Factory Blu-ray.

I really like the original The Fog, great atmosphere. The remake, ugh, terrible.

Talk about self loathing, that'd be considered self harm. There are actually a few parts of the Elm Street remake I liked. The visual aesthetic, reminiscent of a '90s grunge video (no surprise given the director), plus the young cast is pretty talented and enjoyable (and I didn't hate JEH as Fred) and I liked the use of the Everly Brothers song. Shame none of it coalesced into a working film.

The Fog (1980) = Scary, tense, atmospheric ghost story. Classic John Carpenter. The Fog (2005) = A large dung heap.

I prefer the remake. I really like it a lot. I know it isn't highly regarded, but there's something about it. I think it's the ghosts being given a more human component so they're a bit more sympathetic IMO. And I love the ending. The original is a better overall film, and Jamie Lee does no wrong AFAIC. It was cool seeing her with her mom, but I like the remake fir what it is. I assumed I was the only one who liked it, lol. Glad I'm not totally alone!

The Fog has never been one of my favorites, I don't dislike it but I don't go out of my way to see it. The remake was terrible IIRC and the short lived tv series is possibly one of the worst tv shows I've ever seen and that's saying something.

I've seen the original twice on TV. I've skipped the remake because I keep hearing that it's rubbish.

Y'know... I don't completely hate the remake. It's very corny and over the top. Not sure we needed a whole back story on the Fisherman. Or basically making it Maggie Grace's movie tho. We had that awesome Campfire story from part 1.
Things I liked...
Dan the Weatherman and Selma Blair... She's no Adrienne Barbeau. But she's okay. Liked their banter.
Tom Welling and his Boat partner were likable. The others not so much.
Cons...
Really lacks the atmosphere of part 1... it's more action oriented.
Janet Leigh and her assistant were awesome in the original. We don't get those characters here.
Just my 2 cents.
