Kevin Kline. Listening to the audio commentary with producer Stuart Cohen. He also mentions John Carpenter’s first suggestion for the roles included Tom Atkins as MacReady, Isaac Hayes as Childs, and Donald Pleasance as Blair.

Pleasence would have been great as Blair. Kline--horrible. Maybe someone like Powers Boothe would have been a better choice than Russell. I've met people who were stationed in Antarctica. You have to be weird or tough. One guy told me a bucket of boiling water thrown out the door will turn to ice before it hits the ground. Ironically he came from Stewart British Columbia and remembered when the Thing was being filmed.

I think Kline would have been fine in the role.

Kline would’ve been fine. If he was able to channel anything similar to his character in Silverado he could pull off the kind of gruff but also threatening character.

Russell is amazing, so I’m not about to wish something potentially bad on a perfect thing.

This is what I mean about casting people who wouldn't fit the type. Kline has played wimpy characters yet he is supposed to be believable as a mountain man? Russell was most believable in Breakdown I thought because he seemed not very threatening--kind of an every man white collar guy, especially when he was in scenes with MC Gainey who was more intimidating.

Eh, no thanks. I like Kevin Kline but I think he’d be an ill fit.
