While exploring on the West African coast in the 5/6th century, the Carthaginian explorator Hanno the Navigator found an island populated by hirsute and hairy population, that was really aggressive and threw rocks at them. They then tried to capture them but they struggle so violently that they killed them. See more infos here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanno_the_NavigatorI personally find this story pretty intriguing. Were they really humans (but it seems odd that their body hair shocked Hanno so much, and that even the women seemed so hairy (maybe it was a recluse population with hypertrichosis?)) or were they apes that the Carthaginians mistook for humans not knowing what apes are?

Could had been Bili Apes. They're just chimpanzees but they tend to be more aggressive and a tad bigger.
