How would you describe the difference between someone who is evil and somebody who is insane? Two people who might be capable of committing similarly horrific acts against humanity, but who are somehow wired differently...
I have a hard time when I try to decide on what is evil. I guess I think that somebody who is truly evil lacks something that most of us have. Compassion, empathy, conscience and also knowing the difference between right and wrong, evil cannot harbor these qualities. Maybe also a pathological narcissism is a common trait in evil. Looking at serial killers is as good a place as any. I would say that Ted Bundy and John Wayne Wayne Gacy were most likely evil people. Though with Bundy, he almost seemed more like a vicious predator, the way he managed to escape from the high security prison because he was compelled to kill. He was like a wild animal, more predatory than a great white shark.
Jeffrey Dahmer, I'm not as convinced that he was truly evil. I just think he was extremely messed up in the head. Watching him during interviews, he didn't put out the same vibe as other serial killers. I don't know. And then there's Aileen Wournos, who I think was just plain mad at the world. I have a tendency to feel a tremendous amount of pity for the Aileen Wournos' of this world.
I am going to post this on the general board as well. But what movie characters who do awful things would you say are "evil" and what characters who do similarly terrible things would you say are "insane".
Like, for example, the Tooth Fairy in "Manhunter" or Leatherface in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"...

evil : Nurse Ratched and no ... she was NOT "just doing her job" ! I cannot begin to express how much I loathe Nurse Ratched. I've always thought she was just so cold. And that her coldness was because of her refusal to give in or acknowledge her sexuality, her femininity. Ken Kesey really did create two brilliant characters in Randall Patrick MacMurphy and Nurse Ratched. Because there ARE females out there who hate and resent men deeply, in the bottom of their black hearts. Simply because they are men. And Bitch Ratched takes full advantage of her station to strip the men of their dignity. What she does to Billy is just the cruelest thing. Oh, and the way she doesn't even feel bad about what happened to Billy! She just turns to look at MacMurphy with her dead eyes as if to say "so there". I love it when MacMurphy chokes her. Oh, heavenly joy! I've never gotten more riled from watching a movie than when he's trying to choke the life out of her. I'm literally climbing on the back of my chair, cheering him on with the other men. But the bitch gets off too easy. In the book, MacMurphy rips the front of her nurse's uniform, exposing her large breasts in front of the other men. Kesey was saying that after this revelation, Ratched would never again have the same kind of power over the men. It would have taken the movie off kilter, but I would have liked to see MacMurphy shove his big Irish cock inside her and he would just keep giving it to her until she knew the rapture. Make her glow. But then she wouldn't be her evil self. I hate Nurse Ratched more than any other character who ever lived, fictional or real.

Evil can be rational
To me the difference is summed up in Thanos. In the movies he’s given a rational reason for his plans. In the comics He is given an insane reason.
Another one is Batman’s Joker vs. Dark Knight’s Joker.

"Evil" typically means you have self autonomy over your actions, "insane" implies you have at least some lack of self control. That's why criminals will sometime plead "insanity" during a trial.

Evil - someone that does bad and knows that what they are doing is bad
Insane - severe mental illness (a paranoid schizophrenic for example)
ie. someone who kills innocent people, but thinks they are monsters sent to kill them.

This insanity is so logical. There's a sprinkler system where they're being held. The fo'c's'le. Hit a button, it starts to flood. In a short time, they'll all drown. Ryback will kill himself to save them. You're a maniac. Drowning your own crew. They never liked me anyway. Bet they fucking love you now.
