What do you guys think of Telefunken as a brand? I am thinking of buying a 55 inch Telefunken Smart TV, which will cost the rand equivalent of around 360 dollars. Should I rather be buying a Samsung or HiSense or LG tv?

Telefunken. What in hell?
Get yourself a Zenith. And while you're at it get a good old Kentucky Harvester to plow your turnip patch.

To be honest, I just want to know which brand of TV is going to read every single type of file through it's USB port. Samsung seems like a good brand, but I remember my late aunt struggling to play a download of Game of Thrones on it.

Telefunken (PArt of AEG Electrolux) used to be a traditional german company, decent quality. But licenses for the name was bought by the chinese already decades ago. What you buy here is a chinese developed, managed and produced product. What that means? No idea, but i personally don't trust in longevity of chinese products.
For Smart TVs I would always choose Samsung, LG or Sony.

They use Android TV as operating System, and you can install VLC Player there, which is known to play almost everything. DMCA/Copyright protected videos might be an issue on ALL SmartTVs though.

But how long will it last after warranty is over? I always have the feeling there is planned obsolescence with chinese products.

What are the main choices in SA? LG is probably the most popular smart TV in Israel.

Should I rather be buying a Samsung or HiSense or LG tv? How long guarantee? If it's two years then it pretty much pays for itself. i have a Samsung 55" 4k which I would highly recommend. They all have built in obsolescence these days and the cheap prices reflect that. From a "smart" point of view, what's the interface like? Samsung is the best I've seen followed by LG.

I am almost certainly going with a Samsung smart TV zehgerman. This morning (Thursday) I am going to an amazing dealer, and the salesman has said I can bring a stick filled with all types of files and test them out on the display model. My biggest concern at this stage is whether or not I can access subtitles files on the Samsung when playing back foreign language movies through the USB port - the Telefunken smart tv can access the subtitles on the files through the tools menu). Three veteran dealers today told me that in their and their customers experience the Samsung TV played every different type of file they have tried on it over the years; DMCA/Copyright protected video or not.

I have no problem with AVI, mkv, MP4 on my Samsung, only thing I sometimes oddly find is that the subtitles on downloaded material (English) come on automatically and I need to turn them off. Never had any problem with softcoded subs playing either, and if in a separate SRT file just make sure it is identically named to the film file. You honestly can't beat Samsung as long as you don't mind the conspiracy theory that it may be watching and recording your every move.

I bought a fantastic Samsung smart TV with 4k etc, and And, like you say, all the sub files work (as they do when I watch through the USB port on my Blu Ray). It has been a trip seeing what my Blu Rays look like when played on this TV. Wow, I'm a happy camper tonight.

The discs are overpriced but Christ they look good.
