This is could have been a truly terrific film, but the filmmakers couldn't quite bring it together. It was probably 45 minutes longer than it should have been, in their hands. A different writer & director could have made it a good 2-hr film. The editor also did a horrible job.
If you like Deborah Kerr, you'll love it because she is onscreen for almost the entire film. Good performances by the supporting cast as well, even if not enough screen time for Donald Pleasence. Sharon Tate was absolutely stunning, but also only on screen for a few minutes. (This was her first credited film role.)
Great score in the third act (although the quality of the recording in the version I saw wasn't very good). And impressive set design and picturesque location of the chateau.
