This ought to make the Marvel fantards heads explode. Moore has made it pretty clear that he doesn’t like superhero stories in general, particularly in terms of how commercialized they’ve become. As far as he’s concerned, Marvel and DC are both bad.

"I have no interest in superheroes, they were a thing that was invented in the late 1930s for children, and they are perfectly good as children’s entertainment. But if you try to make them for the adult world then I think it becomes kind of grotesque."
But that's what he is best known for!

There seems to some unknown force that gravitates these weird interviewers to poke the bees nest of curmudgeonly old cunts these days.

I find it hard to take his criticism of what superhero movies are when he states he hasn't watched any since the 1989 Tim Burton Batman, it's like with Scorsese you either watch them and can complain about them or you don't at which point shut the fuck up about what they are, what they do and all this other bullshit for fuck sake.
I also find it funny he's talking about how people wanting to watch these movies is a terrible sign of nostalgia and escapism, then starts saying how he think Batman 66 is the best thing , you know the thing HE watched as a child...hilariously it's such a bullshit argument when you actually think about things, just makes Moore sound like a moron to a large extent really.

He actually said this: "I have no interest in superheroes, they were a thing that was invented in the late 1930s for children, and they are perfectly good as children’s entertainment. "Increasingly I think the best version of Batman was Adam West, which didn’t take it at all seriously" "But if you try to make them for the adult world then I think it becomes kind of grotesque." Spot on.

I'll agree that there are probably TOO many super hero movies a year, especially when they're at the expense of other types of movies getting made. I'd like to see more of a mix, not just indy dramas OR big tent pole FX extravaganzas. There need to be more middle ground movies, like there used to be.
And I don't want Netflix and streaming services to get everything. I still actually like going to see movies at the theatre.
However, we all know that Moore, as brilliant as he is, is also cuckoo for cocoa puffs. His opinions must be taken with a grain of salt.
Love the man, but he crazy!

People aren't going to start watching indie movies because because there are less super hero movies. Also how do you define a superhero movie, do you mean a superhero cbm? because if not weren't almost every Stallone, Arnie, Seagal, Norris, JCVD, Willis action vehicle basically a superhero movie? not to mention any sort of IP live action movie like Transformer,s Sonic, GI Joe and so on, which atleast those sometimes get counted as such. I mean if we go by what Wiki refers to as "superhero" movies since 2016 we have had 9 movies in 2016, 10 in 2017, 11 in 2018, 10 in 2019 but if we look at 2015 we just had 4, and these don't include things like SW which lets be honest they are fucking superheros for christ sake. It's not we need less superhero movies we "need" less IP movies, but then the IP is what sells, Joker made over $1b but take away the DC of it all and make the same movie without the IP attachments and pandering and how well does it do? probably not even 1/3 as well, still would have been a smashing hit for the studio but it wouldn't have been the phenomenon it was. But still we get less than 1 of those types of movies a month yet we get over 200 movies a year, seriously people say we get too much of these types when they make up less than 5% of the annual release schedule? how many fucking rom coms do we get a year? From 2016 to 2019 we got 37, thats about the same frequency we get comic book movies, why does no one say we get too many of those? People just bitch about CBM's because CBM's dominate at the box office, but they do that because it's what people want to see, guess what when spy thrillers start bringing in atleast a billion a year in domestic box office revenue we'll see more of them, until then we get what keeps the movie industry churning and right now Superhero films and big IP movies is what keeps these studios afloat.

Whereas three mid-range dramas could be made for that budget. Redistribution of budget money so we can get more variety in movies.

The argument is that comic book movies cost so much to make just one. Whereas three mid-range dramas could be made for that budget. Redistribution of budget money so we can get more variety in movies. Except we cant, we already get on average 2.5 new movies a week as it is, how are we supposed to get more new movies without films having to be out of the theatres in a month? there are about 120-140 new movies given wide releases theatrically each year, 2/3's or so by major studios, and only 24 films released last year had a budget over $100m, and not all of those $100m were theatrically released, in contrast there was 131 wide release theatrical films last year, so that's less than 20% the bulk of the movie release calendar is made up of under $100m movies. The myth is we don't get variety, we do people just don't actually give a shit enough to watch them, and it's not through lack of trying the studios release like I said 107 movies last year with under $100m in production cost, but still 6 major releases by Disney made up almost 1/3 of the annual box office take, 6 movies made up around 30-31% of the box office, the other 125 movies plus limited release films made up the other 69%, hell the top 20 grossing films of 2019 grossed just shy of $5.8b of the $11.255b that domestic theatres took in last year, it's not about a lack variety that's just a BS excuse people use.

When massive blockbuster movies open up in 4000+ screens the other movies don't GET the chance to be seen. I had to HUNT down Dark Waters last year, and because it was seen by so few people, that movie, one of the best of the year, and a movie of importance because of its subject matter, did poorly and was not even considered for awards. You might be right that the average audience member may not seek out a lot of diversity. Then again the average audience member has been "trained" by massive advertising campaigns to only consider big blockbuster movies. But those of us who are actually into movies, and want to see them in the theatre, and actually seek them out, DO want the diversity. And that's not BS. I love big blockbusters too. But the bottom line is that NO movie needs to cost 300 million dollars to make. Its outrageous when you stop to think about it that a movie should cost that much to make. And that's without advertising! Those movies need to make SO much money to make a profit that the whole process of making that money comes at the expense of smaller (and often better) films. That's not BS either.
