It's one of the few movies that I think is really good, but I don't really like it.
Probably has something to do with seeing it as a kid and being scared out of my mind.

Not overrated at all, one of the greatest horror movies ever made.
Whenever I hear folks say "it wasn't scary at all", I always wonder if maybe when they are lying in bed at night after watching it, they start hearing THAT voice.
Some movies seep into you, The Exorcist is one of those. It's one of those of those films you think about for days after. That's a sign of effective horror.

You just want everyone to know that you don't think the movie is good or scary. Cool. I feel the same way about The Omen. Now what's to be done?

I like it better than the OP, but I agree that it is not very scary and somewhat overrated. The idea of possession can be very frightening as was shown in the excellent film "The Innocents", but I just don't think it was done well here. To me, it's just shock value. There are definitely things I like about it, like the acting and the score and the mother-daughter relationship, but I've never found the film to be scary in the least. I can't wrap my head around it. I find "The Omen" to be way scarier than this.

I see it in the Burke Dennings stuff, but people like me are accused of seeing something that wasn't intended by the writer or director. Dennings comes off a camp and queer to me. I have never got that impression. He clearly has a thing for the mother.

Blair Witch Project (1999) is the scariest movie.

The voice is not just creepy, it is aggressively creepy.

I saw it when it first came out, I was 18. It scared me so much I couldn't watch it. I think it's because I'm Catholic and I get easily scared

I can only speak for myself. To me, a horror fan, it's the scariest movie I've ever seen. And I only watch it late at night with the volume high and the lights out. It's also one of my favourite movies but I''m a big fan of the director's work in general.

The Exorcist was unlike any other movie ever and it scared the bejezus out of just about everyone who saw it. This was before blood and gore and green pea spewed barf and f-bombs flung by just about everyone became stock in trade for movies !
Words of mouth was what sold tickets !
Back in the good old days before internet and ratings etc .. a movie was a movie and not liked or disliked because it was "over-rated" or "under-rated" ! Imo this is a really lame way to "judge" a movie.

There have always been critics, even for novels and plays before movies were even invented. There is a whole bunch of simplification going on in your reply imo.

Imo this is a really lame way to "judge" a movie. There's constructive criticism which respected film critics and movie theorists do (often analysing a body of work intently), and frivolous and impulsive personal criticisms which tell you more about said critic than the movie being addressed. A crying shame that we've come to this as a society.

moviemouthWhat we have now is a movie being judged because it is "over-liked" or "under-liked" compared to other movies. This whole comparison by "ratings" by amateur movie "experts" affects opinions of movies unfairly, imo. Movies USED to be liked or disliked on their own merits and not "this one was liked more than that one so I don't like it BECAUSE of that! Sure there were always media based "critics" but they were professionals and supposedly trained in knowing more about what they were talking when it came to film/book/plays than some random person with a vote on the internet.

You are someone assuming the purpose of everyone's rating and the way everyone judges movies. You are throwing everyone in the same basket and that is a mistake that an intelligent person like you should not be making. Everyone is a movie critic whether they want to admit it or not. The average movie goer is who is important, not the people who "know what they are talking about." Art isn't science.

Everybody deserves a voice but one look at imdb makes you realise people vote movies down due to personal / private grudges / prejudices. That's what I find deeply objectionable (so I reject it as a consumer outright).

Everybody deserves a voice but one look at imdb makes you realise people vote movies down due to personal / private grudges / prejudices. That's what I find deeply objectionable (so I reject it as a consumer outright). Of course they do. For me at least it is literally impossible for me to rate a movie objectively and that also ruins what I find so interesting about art. Anybody who says they don't have those things is either in denial or a flat out liar. Now if you mean people who down-vote past their actual opinion to make the rating go lower on whatever website, especially before watching the movie, then I definitely agree. My ratings are merely a subjective reflection of how much I like the movie. Anybody who thinks my ratings are something else are mistaken. As long as someone is being honest about why they like or dislike a movie then I have no problem. One thing I do think is a problem is when people's rating don't seem to reflect their actual opinion about the movie. I like this movie, but I rate it 5/10 etc. What the fuck is that about? Someone needs to really explain their rating system for me to understand that opinion with that rating.
