There was a time I used to love reading user comments more than videos on youtube. I don't deny that there are still many good comments that can be found but so many of the top comments are ones where people just want their comments to be liked even if they don't add any value. Also comments like "who came here after seeing this and that video".

I've made a conscious effort to avoid reading YouTube comments. The same tired "look at me" cliches. They were terrible the first time they were said, but repeated ad nauseam again and again and again and people somehow think they're still saying something unique, interesting, relevant or funny.

Then there are the sad, sad "love you" comments.

Sometimes there are videos where you want to eagerly scroll down to read the comments, only to see "comments disabled".

Yeah, it's the lack of originality that turns me off the most. Also, most of the comments are more or less the same. Consider this comment: If you see animal videos then almost 90% comments are in this format. May be some people find it funny, I don't.

Exactly, it's the lack of originality, but posted as if it was somehow groundbreaking. The first couple of times, maybe it was mildly amusing.

I haven't paid enough attention to have noticed it on YouTube. I usually don't read the comments. But it reminds me of online arguments about religion where a poster will pose a complex question about theology, and there will be a litany of comments from atheists simply stating "There is no god."
when i first started IMDb's general boards I thought I would mostly be at the religion board. But it was just "there is no God" comments. One sanctimonious poster in particular. lol I hardly went there. Like you GB i dont read comments.

Atheists can be a pretty self-congratulatory bunch.

Often it to do with the nature of the video itself. If itβs a music video there will be the dreaded βwho is still watching this in 2020β comments but some videos can inspire deliberate lunacy.

That dreaded "who is still watching this in XXYY" is the most frequent one of the senseless comments. These days another one is "nobody searched for this".
