Gal Gadot is apparently playing Cleopatra in a new movie. Thoughts? she will be great.

Even if an actress was found with the proper race that Cleopatra had, the studio would still want to go with Gal Gadot because she's more known and commercially appealing.

I am sure they could have found a Greek actress if they wanted to, but Gal Gadot can pass as Greek so its not that big of a deal. In contrast to what many people seem to think, Cleopatra was not Egyptian she was Greek

Cleopatra was Greek which means that she was white, so i am not sure how you can whitewash a white historical woman.

She released a statement.
"First of all, if you want to be true to the facts then Cleopatra was Macedonian. We were looking for a Macedonian actress that could fit Cleopatra. She wasn't there, and I was very passionate about Cleopatra. I have friends from across the globe, whether they're Muslims or Christian or Catholic or atheist or Buddhist, or Jewish of course. People are people, and with me I want to celebrate the legacy of Cleopatra and honor this amazing historic icon that I admire so much. You know, anybody can make this movie and anybody can go ahead and do it. I'm very passionate that I'm going to do my own too."
Good answer from her, she should also have told these people who clearly have no historical knowledge to F...off.

Depends on the script. Gadot is not too good an actress.

Depends on the script. Gadot is not too good an actress. No, but she is very charismatic. That she is. If they can make the best of what she can offer (see WW1), it can be a great asset to the movie. And they should not let Patty Jenkins to write the script. She is a good director but a lousy writer.

So Patty Jenkins will serve as a producer now. It's going to be directed by Kari Skogland (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier).

I'm more concerned about whether the asp will be real, an unconvincing garden snake, or Boa vs Python CGI.

She looks the part, although historically Cleopatra is speculated to be average-looking. Also, she's an actress of limited range. I would recommend not giving her chunks of dialogue, but under a good director, she'll do fine.

In an interview with InStyle, Gadot describes the approach to this new version of Cleopatra:
"...I can't reveal a lot, but I can tell you that we're going to celebrate the Cleopatra story. We're going to show not just how sexy and appealing she was, but how strategic and smart, and how much impact she had and still has on the world we're living in today. I've watched all the Cleopatra movies throughout history, but I feel like we're telling the story the world needs to hear now."

Not sure how I should set my expectations based on this.

As a history nerd - no thanks As a Wonder Woman fan - maybe
So, if asking on a scale of 1-Not at all Interested to 10-Very Interested, I'd give this a 3 with her as Cleopatra. Of course, it'll probably only cover a teeny, tiny part of Cleopatra's life, it'll be highly dramatized, and probably focus only one of her various love interests, so you don't need to get into how she was a teen when she came to the throne, outed her bro, the whole mosquito bitten Carpet Entrance, years of working with Caesar/etc. to try to save Egypt, the loss of Caesar, Marc Anthony, etc. etc. etc. and all the insane things that happened between marrying her brother and the height of her time with Caesar.

Hey for all we know, you might get lucky if they cover half of that .
