Really one of those perfect marriages of actor and role. Despite Brando winning Best Actor for the first movie, it really was Pacino’s movie. The garden scene between the two of them is probably my favorite scene from the first movie. His character arc from returning soldier to cold hearted bastard feels completely natural. And to think, Paramount didn’t want him for the role. Anyway, that’s enough fawning from me.

How do you feel about his subsequent work in #2 and #3?

How do you feel about his subsequent work in #2 and #3? Well, Part II is in my top 3 favorite movies. He continues his excellent work here in Michael’s further damnation. By part III, Pacino was well into his shouty ways and seemed far removed from the often restrained evil in the earlier films.

And to think, Paramount didn’t want him for the role. Partly* because his scenes were being shot in sequence and they thought he was underacting...to think there was a time Pacino and "underacting" could be used in the same sentence. They shut the fuck up after he filmed the restaurant scene, which for my money is the best acted scene in the film. That's when they realized his understated performance earlier was on purpose. Him in the second film is possibly my favorite performance ever. Then he's basically the only good thing about III even though I have issues with where they took the character. *I say "partly* because it sounds like they also thought he was a little too Italian looking for their movie about Italians...they originally wanted someone like Robert Redford, who's about as Italian as an Olive Garden in Owensboro Kentucky.

Fawn away. Not many actors can send chills down the spine simply with a look. He has experience etched into his face, not all of it good.

I loved Pacino in the first two Godfather movies. He was so on. So different from his later roles and acting methods. ::no::

I love the scene where Michael and Kay walk past the newsstand and Kay sees the newspaper with Vito's story on the front page.
You can literally see the total change on Pacino's face from the one side of the newsstand to the other. Michael becomes a whole different man in that one instance.
Brilliant acting.

James Caan doesn't get really enough love.

Do any of you plan on watching the director's cut of Godfather III when it comes out in December?

Tremendous in part 1. Exceptional in part 2 - one of my top 5 performances.
Watch this silly behind the scenes clip & tell me his stoicism isn't real on camera when it counts.
That vid is so disarming of all 3 Pacino, Duvall, & Caan alike. We're programmed to see them together all strong & quiet or fired up... not dressed down having a lark at a table like this.

His performances in Part 1 and 2 are masterful to say the least. He's still good in Part III, but nowhere near the level of the first two.

For me it's the cast. Pacino/ Brando and everyone in Godfather
II was a different film, no problem with DE Niro.

I think Pacino was brilliant in all three films. Yes, the Vatican scenes in film 3.
