Likely only because of MGM and the situation they are in , unless they sell the movie to Universal for full theatrical rights

At this point, why not? If theaters are really going to be open a year from now (which honestly feels doubtful), there's going to be an insane glut of backlogged movies and no one is going to make the money they hope/expect. I suspect we're going to see a lot of this in the next 6 months or so. Anyone who thinks we're going to be out of the woods by mid-2021 is kidding themselves.

Even with what theaters are facing in mind, that would be surprising.

I hope not, I want to see it on the big screen. But considering that streaming services are buying up everything, at this point I wouldn't be surprised, if I woke up one day to realize that my life has become part of a Netflix show.

'In fact, further information from Deadline reveals none wanted to pay more than half the asking price and that Eon, as well as principal producer Barbara Broccoli, opposed the deal."
Dang, no one wanted a James Bond movie.

More like no one could afford a James Bond movie. Big difference. If you want to stream a Bond movie be prepared to pay over a billion or fuck off. Netflix needs to stick to shit documentaries.

I live Downunder and cinemas have been open since July. They are restricting numbers to sessions, but these big budget films can still be released here, but won't be because of not getting a big US theatrical run.
They would just run more sessions on more screens in the bigger multiplexes to fan it all out like they did with Tenet. A film only really need do well in the US to make back its massive budget and somewhere like Oz or NZ just don't have the population to assist these major films in making a profit, let along breaking even.
My other concern now, is the Northern Hemisphere is coming into its winter season and therefore flu season. When all the covid hysteria happened, it was in northern region spring. Common colds, flu's and viruses are going to be run amuck, let alone dealing with covid. ย ย Pretty much. America: ruining it for everyone else since 1776.

Iโd rather see it in a theater but Iโll buy it online, if it comes to that.

Why can't they release it in theaters for a couple of weeks and then give it to streaming? Netflix does it with their Oscar bait.

They should just hold a Biden celebration in each theater and the CV will magically go away for the duration of the showing. People can hug each other without worries. The Biden Effect.

On a personal note, it would give me a chance to watch however many Craig has done since CASINO ROYAL.
Honestly, I think the previously made point about the backlog of movies coming out when things open back up, that no one will make quite as much money. Not to mention, there's a good chance even when stuff does first open back up, there may still be some restrictions (the latest timeline I read, the vaccine might be widely available to most Americans, by August of 2021 but could be as late as Oct 1st, so even next summer cinemas will likely still have lower numbers they are permitting in a theatre per screening in order to maintain some social distancing) so between the "backlog buildup" and the social distancing restrictions, there won't be quite as much money to go around during Blockbuster season.
Guy I went to college with, his father owns a smaller theatre and is friends with a guy who owns a small, independent movie theatre 45 minutes away. Both of the guys who own the little theatres have said they intend to stay in business just having smaller numbers of customers inside, just as soon as their state declares they can have their places open/etc. Right now, the one is big enough he's allowed to have 8 people per screening room with a total of 40 customers and 6 employees - the other guy's theatre is smaller/older so he can have 6 people per screen with about 40 people total inside the building at a time. They are also selling giftcards hoping people will buy them now and use them NEXT year, they are selling their concessions through a window so you can get movie theatre popcorn without actually going to a movie/coming inside the building, and the smaller of the two has an area outside to the back where they have set up sort of an ice cream shop with bar stools and high tables so they can run it like an ice cream parlor.

I heard that, for reasons related to the pandemic, any movie with a planned theatrical release in 2020 that is made available on streaming or VOD will be Oscar eligible for 2020.

What a mess.
This whole year is mucked up for movies because of the virus.
