Beating out Superman II. I find that surprising.

I thought Raiders of the Lost Ark was the highest-grossing film of 1981.

Beating out Superman II. I find that surprising. That is indeed surprising, especially since Superman II was a summer release (On Golden Pond came out in February).

Interesting, especially since today a major motion picture starring old people would never get made.

It was released in December 1981. I remember the newspaper ads for it.

A nostalgic trip featuring a well beloved movie star? Why not.

I knew On Golden Pond was a box office hit, but I had no idea that it surpassed Superman II! Who would have thunk it.

Some old geezer flick beat out Superman? Better introduce Batman and kill his ass for the next one.

Interesting, especially since today a major motion picture starring old people would never get made. They apparently barely got made then. The movie was in theaters for a good chunk of the year. It also looks like Superman 2 released within a week of Raiders and Raiders also had longer legs.

Wide release February 1982 so it made most of its money in 1982. Thus Superman 2 was the second biggest hit of 1981.

A lot of golden age superstars were still with us in the 1980's so it's not a surprise that there were a decent amount of films featuring "old people" in them during the decade.

Interesting, especially since today a major motion picture starring old people would never get made. You had to big stars from the Golden Age - that was the draw. Also, Jane working with her father. And the story was poignant.
