I never thought I'd see John Spartan and Prime having a "fight". I love it.
Anyway, Eddie Murphy was big and so were cop movies.

Eddie Murphy was a bona fide star during that era because of Saturday Night Live and the box office hits 48 Hrs and Trading Places. And I believe word-of-mouth helped out a great deal as well.

Haven’t watched it yet though I plan to. The main thing I noticed about this movie is how huge but was. In 1984 it Outgrossed not only Temple of Doom but even the original release of Ghostbusters (though that got a re release the next year which pushed it over BHc) and Back to the Future the following year despite those two films feeling way more iconic. Adjusted for inflation it probably is at 500m or so domestically. Why was this movie such a phenomenon? Eddie Murphy at the time was a superstar because of his days on Saturday Night Live, the hit movie "48 Hours," and his hit HBO special "Delirious." This is why all the crying about "Movies never had diversity till "Black Panther!" is a total crock. Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2 are great, way better than Tyler Perry and Jordan Peele's garbage. Eddie Murphy playing a role that Sylvester Stallone turned down. Then, Murphy being the sole black person being a box office superstar in the 1980's. Now, Will Smith and Denzel Washington work behind the camera as well as in front of it. Tyler Perry might be garbage with the Madea movies, but not Jordan Peele. If you're the guy who I think you are, I bookmarked one of your lists from the old site.

I was a baby when it was in theatres so i don't remember...but...
Its probable that Eddie Murphy was a newly big box office draw. This came right after 48 Hrs and Trading Places along with his SNL stint and his stand up special Delirious.

Eddie Murphy owned the 80s. It was an awful decade in real life, a time of nuclear paranoia, the film lovers of the time cried out for pure escapism, something to lift your spirits. Hills Cop does this in abundance with Murphy absolutely electric (backed up by super writing). It's why films like Crocodile Dundee were so popular and when Batman came out it was a sort of release.

Eddie was big at the time (it was before my time but it’s obvious) and I guess that the soundtrack was popular too. Eddie Murphy’s Delirious had already been released, and that was evidently very popular, everyone seemed to quote from that in the 80s.

In 1984, the three biggest stars in the entertainment world were Eddie Murphy, Michael Jackson, and Bill Cosby. Part of that "systemic racism" that was such a plague on American society. And Richard Pryor was the biggest just before them.
