The embargo has been lifted. The consensus so far suggest that the film is a marked improvement on Prometheus, but still leans heavilly on the tropes of the earlier films. The Guardian (Some plot spoilers) IGN

If it's little more than a modern retread of Alien, I'd still be pleased given that we hadn't really had a satisfactory one of those in decades. For the fifth film in a franchise, I'd love it to return to earlier tropes assuming we're talking Alien and Aliens rather than 3 and Resurrection.

I will have to come back to this thread once I've seen the movie, but I'm going to go ahead and disagree anyway. The original movie is about a group of miners who accidentally stumble across an Engineer ship and...well we all know the rest. This one is about a bunch of explorers looking to colonize foreign worlds. They aren't coming home from their journey, they are setting off on one and seemingly do not plan on returning to Earth. There's also all the stuff about the Engineers, multiple types of xenomorphs, and a mad scientist android; none of which are present in the original movie.

"Disagree" with what? It can be a modern retread of sorts without possessing exactly the same plot elements and characters.

It's a soft reboot and hopefully, they can do a hard reboot with the new sequel to Aliens by Blomkamp.

I didn't pay too much attention to the marketing for Covenant, but it was my understanding that Ridley had decided to drop his planned Prometheus sequel and go in another direction (possibly prompted by the studio after the negative reaction to Prometheus). Now maybe I just misinterpreted that. But the fact is that Covenant is most definitely a full-on sequel to Prometheus, and if you didn't like that movie then you probably won't like this one. I thought it was pretty poor. The visuals are good, better than average - but not as good as Prometheus. (In my opinion the visuals were the only good thing about Prometheus.) The story is... well the basic plot regarding the Covenant itself is fine. But when the Prometheus stuff kicks in it all derails into the for the rest of the film. And that's just a story that I think is stupid, unnecessary and uninteresting. The real Xenomorph shows up like 90 minutes into the film, finally... and it's kind of disappointing. Actually the film repeats the timeline weirdness that plagued A v P - we have a guy who goes from facehugger to chest burster in a matter of maybe an hour or less - and from baby Xeno to adult in a matter of a few minutes. And once grown, it's just a generic movie monster. None of the tension or fear of the original. It acts like any other animal, and is beaten like any other animal. Remember the way the Nostromo crew kept trying things, and they kept failing? Not so here. The ending contains two things I really didn't like. I'll spoiler tag them... One... the idea that David created the Xenomorphs. Sorry, but that's just ridiculous. And second, the world's least surprising twist ending. The second it cut away from the two robots fighting and then had the "good" one show up, it was so incredibly obvious that it was really David. So yeah, not happy. But if you're a Prometheus fan, you may like it better than I did.

Almost all of the Reviews for "ALIEN: COVENANT" have been Positive. That definitely has me even more excited to see this movie than I already was.
