I'm watching the movie again, maybe for the 3rd or 4th time. I think it improves with each viewing. It's extremely inventive.
Anyway, I don't know if this has been brought up before, but a main plot here is the phantom's feeling of betrayal by the treacherous Swan's stealing (more or less) his songs and the huge success that Swan benefits from, leaving Phantom in the dust.
When POTP was released in 1974, it was a box office flop, earning around $250,000.
Well, one year after POTP was released, "Rocky Horror Picture Show" came out and the rest is history. But, "Rocky", which, like Swan, seems to be stealing from "Phantom" made around $170,000,000.

Not sure what the inspiration for Phantom was. Rocky Horror staggered at the box office at first. It’s instant cult reputation and midnight showings gave it its boost. These 2 films were first released as a double bill mid 70’s in NZ. The writer of Rocky Horror was English but his family emigrated to NZ when he was a kid. Thank you for the background info, Toasty. I did not know any of this. It seems weird, but I have never seen "Rocky Horror Picture Show".

She also thought it was a horror movie because it had the word “horror” in it. I had to explain it to her why it was called that. It’s funny though she knew “The Time Warp” but she didn’t know it was from Rocky Horror.

I had only known it for a scene shown in Terror in the Aisles--the shower scene. It made the film seem really different from the actual film. I was expecting a more outright horror film.
