Any fans of the Kevin Costner movie "Dances with Wolves"? How has it held up after 30 years?
I haven't seen it in many years, but I remember thinking it was good, maybe even pretty good, although it's not a masterpiece nor the Best Picture of 1990 like the Oscars made it out to be. This movie has become more known these days as the forgotten Best Picture winner that beat up Goodfellas at the Oscars. Not only are people mystified it beat Goodfellas for Best Picture, but they're even more mystified Kevin Costner beat Scorsese for Best Director. Any of you ever seen the special edition/director's cut of the movie?
Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Dances with Wolves (1990) - 4 out of 4 stars
"Altogether extraordinary film (all the more so for being Costner's directing debut) about an idealistic young Civil War soldier who makes friends with a Sioux Indian tribe and, eventually, becomes one of them. Simply and eloquently told, with every element falling into place (on breathtaking South Dakota locations). A triumph in every respect. Oscar winner for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay (Michael Blake, from his novel), Original Score (John Barry), Cinematography (Dean Semler), Editing (Neil Travis), and Sound Recording. 237m. "special edition" expands the story and characterizations."

I love Dances With Wolves. Really, it fits into my favorite category, which I describe as "an adventure film that appeals to the boy that still lives within". An early example in this category is Gunga Din. Another is The Great Escape. More recently, Avatar.
The original release version, running three hours is better than the extended version. And when I saw it on its first run, that three hours seemed like ninety minutes.
(Critic Roger Ebert said it was the kind of movie that made him fall in love with movies.)
Many people insist that it robbed Goodfellas of it's Oscar. Not me.
One more thing. It's got John Barry's best non-Bond score.

Its a good movie
I find the question "how has it held up?" silly a good movie don`t suddenly turn bad because its older than 5 minutes.

This is a modern Masterpiece.
It easily earned its Oscar for Best Picture.
I know people say “Goodfellas” got robbed. No. Goodfellas is more entertaining, but that doesn’t make it a better film.
That’s like saying, “Porn is entertaining, therefore it’s better than this film.”
Dances with Wolves is a Classic in American Cinema.

If you want to appreciate the range of Costner's skill, Tin Cup and Mr. Brooks will really give the opposite ends of the spectrum. He's at his loose and funny best in one, and very much the opposite in the other. (Btw, if you're going to watch Mr Brooks, don't read a word about the story beforehand. It's best when it all just unfolds before you.)

And I think the climactic gun battle is one of the best ever filmed.

I didn't get to see it when it was in theaters back in the day, so when I finally saw it, I had a feeling of loss about the fact that I missed out on seeing it on the big screen with its beautiful cinematography. I've seen both this film and Goodfellas, and I feel that this film was the rightful winner of Best Picture.

I have a really big problem with this film. I was enjoying it until the wolf was shot for no apparent reason at the end which just ruined the whole film for me and i ended up giving it a 2/10 because of it. Up until then it was solid.

Familiar with the website "Does the dog die?" You might find it very useful in the future.

Never finished seeing it. Plodding and too reminiscent of Little Big Man.

Too long. I don't normally say that about a movie but I found myself saying "get on with it, get on with it"

Never been interested in it--scenes of the buffalo hunt was a turn off (knowing about the wolf I am glad I didn't see it). Plus as someone said, it sounded like Little Big Man.
When Costner won it meant all the old guard were in line to get Oscars now like Eastwood, Spielberg etc..

Good movie. Been a good few years since I watched it. It's the best Kevin Costner movie I've seen to date, though as others have noted it is a very long film and I wouldn't personally regard it as the best movie of 1990.
