Somewhere in his career he went from minor villain parts, to became a beloved comedian sending up his own old villainous parts. His misaligned eye, he got when a boy scout camp fighting another boy scout. Yes Jack was once a boy scout! This year it was 100 years since he was born, but he lived to be 82 and passed away 17 years ago. Jack Elam 1920 - 2003Before entering movies he worked as a bookkeeper at the Bank of America in Los Angeles and as an auditor for the Standard Oil Company. In World War II, he served two years in the United States Navy and subsequently became an independent accountant in Hollywood; one of his clients was movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn. For a time, he was even the manager of the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles. His acting debut was in an anti-marijuana movie short in 1949. During the 1950's he was a reliable villain, killed by most movie and television stars of the time. "The heavy today is usually not my kind of guy. In the old days, Rory Calhoun was the hero because he was the hero and I was the heavy because I was the heavy - and nobody cared what my problem was. And I didn't either. I robbed the bank because I wanted the money. I've played all kinds of weirdos but I've never done the quiet, sick type. I never had a problem - other than the fact I was just bad" Pissing Gary Cooper off in High Noon 1951 With a gun in his hand, Kiss Me Deadly 1955 A Memorable cameo locking a fly in his pistol, Once Upon a Time in the West 1969. Gonna blow John Wayne's stomach off, Rio Lobo 1970 The Cannonball Run 1981, starring expensive stars and comedians of the day, and yet Jack Elam's Van Helsing was the funniest. He acted in over 200 movies and television production, and still damn hard to find pictures off. (I posted an Interview here that apparently was illegal in some countries) Youtube Jack Elam Letterman post those and maybe... Thanks for watching! All kinds of opinions are welcome!

Only Mike Mazurki and Eric Blore populate as many of my Classic era related fantasies.
Difficult to pick a fave but KISS ME DEADLY and THE FAR COUNTRY were high points on his CV. I didn't care for RANCHO NOTORIOUS but Jack did good. LURE OF THE WILDERNESS (a SWAMP WATER Remake) saw him get his entertainingly . He was always good in the later comedy stuff although I didn't much care for the material.
PRINCESS OF THE NILE is difficult to dislike.

Now the way this story ends... is that they get married and he goes on to become governor of the state. Never gets to Australia, but he keeps readin' a lot of books about it. I get to be sheriff of this town... and then I go on to become one of the most beloved characters in Western folklore.

Why not? could be a new angle! "Oscar nominated actresses who never kissed Jack Elam" and the actors who did, but not Jack.

Grace Kelly and Susan Hayward are two who missed out on that honor.

Grace Kelly and Susan Hayward are two who missed out on that honor. Did he get lucky with Marie Windsor once or is that wishful thinking on my part? And he'd certainly make an interesting Kowalski in STREETCAR - I see a 1957 remake with Olivia as Blanche, Sylvia Syms as Stella and Mazurki as Mitch, with Sirk or Minnelli in full bloom directing....

The old Disney live action film "Hot Lead and Cold Feet" had a side story with Jack Elam and Don Knotts facing off several times, but something happens which causes their duel to end in a funny way.

Elam also populated the world of film noir. Kiss Me Deadly has already been mentioned. He was also one of the bank robbers fighting over the loot in Kansas City Confidential (1952) and was the inappropriately named Fatso Nagel, the master planner of the robberies in the 1957 Mickey Rooney hit Baby Face Nelson which pushed the boundaries of violence set out by the Production Code, just starting to show cracks in its authority. This must be one of th few times he got top billing - an obscure horror western from mid 70s with his FAR COUNTRY co-star Ruth Roman also slumming it. No clinch this time with Ruth for Jack either. I think it can be had on a multi film horror dvd pack under another title iJACK THE RIPPER GOES WEST f anyone interested. and it looks like on import blu ray 4/10
below, with Ruth Roman
and twnety yeas earlier in THE FAR COUNTRY she far left he on the right
