There’s a house next door to me- it’s had three different occupants in the last ten or so years. And they all have had the same bizarre habit of leaving the dining room lights on all night, almost every night. I thought this was unusual when the couple who used to live there did this, but I never gave it much thought. Maybe they felt more secure, I thought. Then an older couple moved in and did the same thing. Now, their daughter and boyfriend live there and carry on the tradition! I can only assume that it’s haunted and the light is kept on to discourage the gathering of ghosts. The only logical explanation is it not? I would inquire but then they would know that I am a peeping Tom!

I'm gonna say not, for two reasons: 1) That's not a logical explanation, and 2) Wonky wiring, bad switch, no switch, rogue clapper, Alexa Gone Wild, and hydroponic tomatoes being grown on the dining table are all logical explanations.

It is strange but I'll go along with bad switch or maybe it's on a timer for some weird reason. Maybe to keep the mice away?
Maybe it's the ghosts themselves that are turning on the lights!

That's only the beginning. This is what you can expect in the near future.

When I was young the living room was the living room and the dining room was the dying room.

The wiring/switch explanation occurred to me. But it’s not on during the day. And there are nights where it isn’t on. It’s very curious. Very curious indeed.

my back door neighbors have their dining room light on all night, too. @forceghostackbar The whole thirty years I have lived here they have been there so it never dawned on me it was weird. I do know the son has a meth problem. I just figured he was tweeking all night.

Presumably unaware that the previous residents did the same! The current residents don’t look like meth heads. They do smoke A LOT of weed though.

Maybe is IS haunted.
Or, perhaps, that house is under the control of aliens from another galaxy, and the light is part of a "network" of lights, meant to guide their various visiting space ships. If that is the case, I think that my over-the-fence neighbors are a part of that system, as they never turn out the damn light on their back deck. It's even on during the day.
I can't think of another explanation that would span 10 years, and 3 sets of occupants. If there is a faulty switch, I would expect that someone would have thought to call an electrician ... for the sake of safety, if not out of consideration for the electric bill.
A fire station in the city of Livermore, in northern California, has a light bulb that is said to have been burning, continuously, for 117 years. It pops up in the news, from time to time. Maybe your neighbors are trying to set another record.

Detective Salzmank's the best ... let's put it in his hands (and mind). I once ran a detective agency with him. The Detective Ackbar / Dr Watsmank Private Investigators Inc. We also briefly ran a donut shop together. He made the best bear claws.

Detective Nalkarj likes a good mystery. Perhaps he can solve it... Detective Salzmank's the best ... let's put it in his hands (and mind). Too kind, folks, but thank you! I agree that three different couples’ doing it is much odder than a single couple’s. A couple questions, though, Ack: 1. Is it just the dining-room lights? No other lights in the house? Regular ceiling-light? Or could it be some kind of nightlight? 2. Is the dining room on the ground floor? 3. You said lights aren’t on on certain nights. Have you noticed a pattern as to when it’s on? One prosaic solution that does occur to me offhand is that the lights are intended to ward off potential burglars. (That doesn’t seem particularly effective to me, but apparently it’s fairly common.) I don’t think it beyond the realm of coincidence that the first two couples could have done it to feel more secure. And the second couple could have passed that tradition on to their daughter, who now owns the house. Another possibility, with the same pass-down situation, is that the lights show the way in case someone gets up to go the kitchen (midnight snack, water) or the bathroom. If you’re close with your neighbors, I don’t think asking them would seem too peeping-tom-ish depending on how you phrase it. Just a “Hey, I woke up the other night and saw all these lights on—was everything OK?” doesn’t seem too weird to me. By the way, I had a similar scenario when I was staying with a relative in Rhode Island: on my second night there, every light in the house next door went on at midnight—porch and every room in the house. Thought the whole thing so bizarre—but never found out!

Thought the whole thing so bizarre—but never found out! 1 and 2) It is a chandelier on the ground floor. I can only see in the one window so it is possible that a kitchen light is on behind it too. Hard to tell. Can’t see the living room. 3) No pattern that I can discern. The lights are on much less often than they used to be. It was every night with the previous occupants. Good theories. It occurred to me that maybe it’s a burglar deterrent as well. Though you cannot see it from the street, only the side of the house. Another theory is that it is for the dog as all the owners have had dogs, and bizarrely, they have all kept the dog bowls in the same spot. I still say it’s spooky ghosts though. 👻

Some people do like to leave a light on to make it look like someone is awake. We used to keep a lamp on in the living room
Now the only light that's on is the stove light
