Farewell Des. I can't say I liked his music, but as as a light entertainment constant he was great, whether the butt of Morecambe & Wise gags, or showcasing US talent on British TV like Jerry Seinfeld, Joan Rivers, Jay Leno, Robin Williams, Steven Wright etc. RIP

Ex docklands boy, saw him at Millwall a few times in the 70's. He even sang on the pitch once. RIP Des.

Charming, likeable and never took himself too seriously. Nice character traits to have. He did a lot to bring acts to a wider audience on his show. Not only the US ones I mentioned already (though some may have been showcased by Bob Monkhouse) but also UK comedians. US comedian Kelly Monteith got a BBC sitcom following his appearances on Des's show - vaguely remember it but was surprised, when I looked it up, that it went on for six series!

I knew I knew that name from someplace.
In the final episode of "Are You Being Served?", Mr. Spooner is sought after by the record companies to sign him to a contract. This was after the talent show that was on the Saturday before.
Mr. Harman, one of the maintenance workers, was reading a newspaper article out loud. The article said that Mr. Spooner was:
'Not unlike a young Des O'Connor'.
RIP Des O'Connor.
