This debate generally seems to boil down to either the 1960s or the 1970s, since that was the age of “New Hollywood.”

1960s and 1970s are the best... Damn, this is hard. I would have said 1970s if you asked me this question in the last 20 years, but the late 70s had less and less GREAT movies (across the world) but the 1960s were great from start to finish. The 70s represent the best decade according to my Top 10 movies, but I wish there was a way to see my IMDB ratings average per decade.
1960s

Personally.
Tie between the 1970's and 1990's.
The 1940's and 1950's were great too.
1960's are more of a mixed bag for me.

It depends largely on one's taste I believe. For me, the 60s have very few films that interest me but the 70s and 80s (especially the first half, when there a was a good mix of crowd pleasers along with solid adult dramas, before blockbusters began taking over in the latter half of the decade) are the best decades. I'd also toss in the 40s.

I’m not talking specifically in terms of this website. I mean that in terms of the broader discussions about movies, those tend to be the default answers.

In my personal opinion the 1930s I thought that as soon as I saw the thread title. 1939 is widely acclaimed but for me it is '35. The 39 Steps Bride of Frankenstein David Copperfield A Night at the Opera Captain Blood Mutiny on the Bounty Anna Karenina Even the B films of that year are outstanding.

That must be from one of the newer episodes that I haven't seen. That is a hilarious joke though.

Basically down to these IMO (I want to choose 80s but I feel like that’s a bit of a copout answer).
70s - Most sophisticated
80s - Most fun
90s - Most experimental

70s - Most sophisticated 80s - Most fun 90s - Most experimental The 1960's is the most experimental imo, and it isn't even close. That is part of why it is such a mixed bag for me. It is basically the decade that popularized independent cinema and turned the concept of a plot on it's head with stuff like 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It is basically the decade that popularized independent cinema and turned the concept of a plot on it's head with stuff like 2001: A Space Odyssey. I guess you have a point. Although most decades are experimental in some way. The 90s had a lot of independent films that shaped cinema in one way or another. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are best known for their nonlinear storytelling, and even though there have been films to do that in the past, those 2 solidified that trope and made it a technique for some movies.
