Is it actually good? New, sucky MTV gave it a Best Tv Show award. The trailer makes it look like a tv version of the movie "Super 8."

I like it, especially as a child of the 80s. It was really well done and definitely has an It/Goonies/ET type of feel.

I tried to watch Stranger Things, but I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes. I'll give it another shot some day.
I recommend The Leftovers or The OA, which are supernatural/mystery type shows that are incredibly compelling, addictive, and entertaining.

However, I found it to be a blast. It was one of the best shows of last year and certainly the most fun.

I'll probably watch the first episode soon just for the hell of it.

Neither have I. Probably watch it three years down the road. It's what I do.

Like salomonj said, it was a fun series that was very easy to watch. All the characters were well written, especially the kids (which is real rare in TV.) I get the concern about MTV rating the best TV series, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

My personal opinion is it's overrated as a result of the kids being better actors than expected.
It's good but it's a little too garbled for my tastes.
Hopefully, it will be streamlined a bit with the origin story out of the way.

I just finished The Leftovers the book. Now I need to watch it. I also liked the OA. They are coming out with a 2nd season of it. Travelers is also a very good show.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love coming-of-age stories in book or video form. If you liked Goonies you'll like this. Someone mentioned OA and Leftovers. IMHO, they don't compare to Stranger Things. Although OA kept me coming back for more it was a little convoluted and I didn't care for Leftovers at all.

It's set in the 80s and it very deliberately goes for the kind of look and feel of Spielberg productions from that time - kids having adventures with little parental supervision or involvement, absent fathers, weird paranormal or alien forces at work, etc. It's a bit more spooky/horrific than Spielberg generally went for, though. Overall it's definitely worth a watch. At least give it a go, you can always drop it if you don't like it.

Okay, I watched the first episode. As soon as it began, I was liking it, but as it went on I liked it less and less. The pacing is pretty slow and tedious and some of the characters are uninteresting like the sister and her boyfriend. I may watch the second episode, but I'm in no hurry to.

Stranger Things could have been over built up for you. It's not a masterpiece by any means. Just a fun little show. The sister and her boyfriend might get a little more interesting as the show goes on. It's not a long series and not too much time to invest to finish the show. I recommend atleast two more episodes.

I think it's really overrated and definitely doesn't deserve the 9 rating it has on imbD. As others on here have said, it's very derivative of Spielberg films like The Goonies and ET, and Super8. I've tried watching it again after hearing people say how great it was, and actually saw a few episodes, but I gave up again. As for the much touted acting of Wynona Ryder, I thought she was shrill and overacted.

Although the homages to 80's films like E.T. and The Goonies were bit heavy handed, it's a pretty good show. Easy to follow and with likeable characters, particulary the kids. Child actors don't always work but I have to say Stranger Things did surprisingly well with them.
If you like the 80's style Spielberg, particulary E.T., you should watch it.

Maybe these glowing reviews about her acting are out there, but I have read more reviews stating the opposite

But I do like her on Stranger Things.
