I think 'hate' is a strong term and I like to use 'dislike' but so be it. Who in your opinion is the most hated athlete in sports. You can go past and present here. Past - I think the Michael Vicks and Mike Tysons of the world were truly hated but redeemed themselves in a way. Although not a popular sport - one guy that fell from grace and never seemed to get back on top - Lance Armstrong. Present Day: Sidney Crosby? Draymond Green? I go Sid the Kid in a landslide. Go! Past/Present Most Hated.

Past - Ty Cobb, easily. More modern, Christian Laettner (how many have documentaries about the hate?), Muhammad Ali (in his prime). One that I'll throw out that few remember was Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson. Holy Moly, was he detested. A lot of players from the 70's Flyers, the "Bad Boys" Pistons.
Present - Debatable. Tim Tebow, Sidney Crosby, Cristiano Ronaldo

Past / Recent Past - Lance Armstrong, A-Rod, Michael Vick, Barry Bonds, Claude Lemieux
Present - I don't know who this would be. Tom Brady? I don't think he's universally hated but I can't stand Eli Manning. For me personally, I hate particular fanbases and teams more than individual players. For example, I think Washington DC and Boston fans are generally pretty terrible. I hate Jerry Jones.

Sid? Maybe in Philadelphia. I thought Sid was 'Universally' hated? Funny thing - Flyers are the 4th most popular out of the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, Flyers - but they do have a hardcore fansbase. Crosby was always one of those guys like Lindros in my eyes where you hated him - but if he was on your team you loved him.

Even as a grown man - there was just this smugness about him you hated and despised - none the less that's what makes an athlete interesting in my eyes - they stir up emotion in you - and as I was watching that 30 for 30 - I couldn't help but think to myself - you're still a giant D-Bag after all these years!

I'd say Barry Bonds and unfairly so. PEDs or not - Bonds still belongs in the Hall. 5 tool athlete. he 'enhanced' his stardom with Peds - Peds didn't create him.

I don't think he's hated as much as he was about 8 years ago when he had the whining reputation. His play has simply earned him too much respect among serious NHL fans. What real reason is there to hate Crosby in a league with guys like Mike Ribeiro, Ryan Kesler, Brad Marchand, Nazem Kadri, Evander Kane and Milan Lucic? I mean, other than jealousy.

I actually met him a couple times, my brother played HS hoops with him. Just casual meet, but there was no cockiness about him. He was 17 at the time. Just a competitive person. Lost of people like that. Woody Hayes was a very magnanimous person where football wasn't involved. Bob Knight also. Note the people behind the 30 for 30 were Tarheel fans. Bet you could get Dookies to make a "I hate Tyler Hansbrough" film.
