This thread would probably be better coming from Turk or some other Geordie.
The three big teams from the NE seem to have enormous trouble staying in the EPL. Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Sunderland. They seem to be relegation candidates when they do get promoted, with the possible exception of the Magpies although even they can suddenly plummet. What makes it difficult to understand is that they are located in football crazy cities with no competing senior football clubs. Both 'Boro and the Black Cats have been relegated this season and it seems that no matter how much financial backing Steve Gibson provides, the former can't survive upstairs. The Black Cats have barely survived over the last few seasons thanks to the magic wand waving of Dick Advocaat and Sam Allardyce but this season they have surrendered under the doomed David Moyes. I'm sure that they can match the wages being paid by most of the other clubs in the EPL, so what is the missing ingredient in their makeup ?

The people who live there are poor meaning they have lower revenues and they have to pay a premium on players' wages because nobody wants to move to the North East.
HS2 getting completed will help them by bringing them closer to civilisation.
