I also remember him as the dynamite salesman in FOOLS PARADE with Jimmy Stewart.

Thanks for the great tribute, paul. I'm a big fan of Windom's. And I had the good fortune to meet him when he was on location in Kansas shooting THE GYPSY MOTHS in 1968. Have pictures of him somewhere. A very good actor and a very nice man. Here from GYPSY MOTHS with Gene Hackman and Scott Wilson. He played Deborah Kerr's husband in the film, competing with Burt Lancaster for her affections.

We watched The Farmer's Daughter when I was a kid so I was shocked years later when I saw The Detective - he was SO different in that.

Once I knew who he was, much thank's to his many appearances on Murder, She Wrote, I've begun to recognize him for many movies and television productions. A great actor capable of both comedy and drama. The President in Escape from the Planet of the Apes 1971 Captain Spaulding in The Americanization of Emily 1964 I remember My World and Welcome to It from childhood, but didn't know it was William Windom or who he was.

He played frozen turkey thief Charlie Snead in THE HOMECOMING, the pilot film for “The Waltons” TV series. Oddly, I consider that my favorite Christmas movie of all time. Think I’ll watch it tonight.

He became a member of John Hughes' stock company in the 1980s. Hughes liked using old time familiar faces in quirky supporting roles. He brought Paul Gleason, one of my favourite character actors, a degree of recognisability through his work in film. Gleason had been part of Roger Corman's large, revolving stock company and was a man born of the drive-in.
