How many film buffs consider Citizen Kane to be their personal favorite movie of all time? That's not completely fair. I can acknowledge that Star Wars, my personal favorite movie, is highly flawed, While Citizen Kane, not even on my personal top ten, is the far superior film and of greater movie making significance. And I don't believe this because my grandfather said so. I believe this because I know something about movies and movie making and I saw both movies with my own eyes. I definitely wasn’t trying to disparage Citizen Kane. I was just questioning the OP’s claim that movie buffs can’t let the movie go. The general consensus on CK from film scholars and historians is that it’s a monumental film that encapsulates what filmmaking represents as an art form, but it’s not like it’s the only movie that’s held in high regard among film circles.

The day CK becomes an “obscure black and white film” will be the day that movies completly die out as an art form. I don’t think it would, I’m saying they believe if they don’t call it “The Greatest Film of All-time.” It will become that. So they give it that title to give it extra reverence. So young people go “Why” and check it out or research it. Or maybe they just really like Citizen Kane, as crazy as that sounds.
