Any fans of Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull"? Hard to believe it's now 40. Definitely one of Scorsese's best films with career-high work from Robert De Niro (and the rest of the cast) who helped set a standard for physical transformation for an acting role. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Raging Bull (1980) - 4 out of 4 stars"Extraordinarily compelling look at prize fighter Jake La Motta, whose leading opponent outside the ring was always himself. That such an unappealing man could inspire so vivid a portrait is a tribute to the collaboration of Scorsese, De Niro, and writers Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin. There's not a false note in characterization or period detail. De Niro and editor Thelma Schoonamker won richly deserved Academy Awards."

Well crafted but austere and unengaging.

The chemistry between De Niro and Pesci is what makes the film work. That part when LaMotta tries to embrace his brother near the end, even in spite of the way he had treated him, and the way Joey reacts to it, it's just perfect acting. An enduring masterpiece. 10/10.

Yeah, that’s a wonderfully acted scene. The movie itself is, like you said, a masterpiece.

Cold and sterile, yet brilliant. I don't need to warm to every film, this one always commands my attention if it's sat down in front of me. All-time top 5 boxing picture for me and I'm glad he drew from the work of Mark Robson and Robert Wise to make it.

Scorsese was a master at pulling audiences into an unforgiving world with some grim characters but making it magnetic. Raging Bull did it the best of all his stellar filmography. Goodfellas and Taxi Driver come close but RB is my favorite MS picture due to its brutal style and the performance of a lifetime by De Niro.

Some great acting from De Niro and Pesci doesn't make up for the fact that I found the whole enterprise rather dull. I don't get why Scorsese decided to film in black and white either. One of his weaker films IMO. I know that's a popular opinion, but I found it relatively unengaging and depressing.
